Until Ramirez came on they only looked threatening from corners. They had pretty much zilch through the middle as we formed our traditional wall and only Zaha and Townsend's tired-looking legs meant they got more space down our right. Townsend and Zaha were breaking away regularly, which was always our traditional strength and with a bit more composure we could have had another one or two. We played a high-intensity game in the first hour and I don't think we could have kept that up for 90, hence sitting a bit deeper and narrowing the space by the back four pushing up. It wasn't perfect, but for a team low in confidence and with injuries you really couldn't expect more. Even the Bentenke Jnr sub (which I thought was odd) did actually add some energy up front, albeit I hope this was just due to lack of options.

Overall I would say it is unduly harsh to find fault in the performance. In most games both teams will have periods of superiority and it's just ensuring you hold firm, which we did.

Completely agree at this level dominating any team for 90 min is not a realistic option ,management team had it spot on today , great performance

Dominating for 90 minutes is absolutely unrealistic. But we were on top for 30 out of the 90 maybe ?

Much better today
Better allround performance
Im sure Benteke brother replacing Christian was part of a bet that Pardew put on

Anyway
A win is a win and Palace played well

I fail to see were I have expressly blamed the manager at all. I suggested that there may be a lack of instruction or incorrect direction but I am not part of the blame Pardew contingent and certainly do not think that all our issues are his fault.

I would also like to point out that what you've said above about us dominating before scoring and then failing to do so afterwards is not just something that has happened today, but has happened for quite a while.

Your point about Liverpool doesn't really seem to make much sense, as the context is completely different. They were 2-0 down and then had 5 minutes of pushing the opposition back. From what I saw of our game today we went a goal up and then sat back...

My point is players mindset and that the manager has little or no influence over that in play.

Liverpool were totally dominant and 1 lapse in concentration by 1 player and the whole team changed and made mistakes almost costing them a 2-0 lead at half time. Nothing Klopp could've done as the players touch went from on the money to very loose as soon as the ball hit the net.

Our mindset has pretty much been that we will not win the game based on our run. As soon as we score and go in front it is visible that it has a negative effect on our players as they have let it slip so many times before. They worry they will make a mistake and that in turn causes a mistake or the player to rush rather than be calm. The only way to get rid of that s to actually get results and the fear will go away, or not be so bad at least.

I can see the changes in the way we play and the way we are trying to keep hold of the ball, it wont be easy and will take time, once we feel under pressure I'm sure we will have lapses where we revert to ur old style of dropping deep and hammering it away as thats what a lot of the players know and have done for an awful long time, the more comfortable they get and once the belief comes back we will be better for longer periods. This win and the last minute goal for the draw will go a long way towards that.

I'd say for longer than that but, anyway, we looked far more of a threat than they did even with Ramirez on (only really right at the end that I was worried we'd concede an equaliser). 'Dominating' is not the same as 'possession'. Boro struck me as a typical solid promoted team: great, but find goals hard to come by/lacking something in that final 3rd. I think we managed the game well and were the better team. Bear in mind: we were away, and Boro were chasing the game for the entire second half. Of course they were going to push us all the way. Generally, good game management and bodes well for the season.

I think I heard Jeff Stelling say that Middlesbrough hadn't previously conceded more than 1 goal in the league at home for 46 games. They've spent to strengthen their squad. They can really play & shouldn't be considered relegation fodder. Just because they're a "promoted side" doesn't mean they're weak as was implied by Matt Jenner in the Advertiser (in his "club divided" article) in a blatant attempt to put AP under pressure and set an ultimatum. Middlesbrough are no push-overs especially at home & this result is some feat. Just the tonic we needed.

Good three points against a poor team who played at home like WBA do away still thats not a bad way to get results against low scoring teams like us. Lots of good play with no real solid chances. Some stupid long punts and poor passes under no presure that has to stop. Punchoen is hit and miss in the same game, so much better higher up the pitch. Benteke is class and will keep us safe like he did for Villa if he stays fit. Stoke will be much harder i hope Cabaye is back to give us a stronger midfield.

Today we got the luck which so far in 2016 has eluded us. We've played far better and lost, but that's football. We win and some people are all "We were brilliant" which we weren't and we lose and it's "We're s***" which many times we ain't.
Today we looked disjointed and very much like a team with several new faces and only one day together to work on a gameplan, but we toughed it out and we haven't been able to do that in recent months. This will boost confidence and hopefully help us now go on a run.
Many people though don't seem to understand how a goal totally changes the mindset of both teams, expecially when confidence levels are different and abilities are similar. Do you honestly believe a manager encourages the players to get deeper and deeper? It's a mental thing and with the run we've been on it's understandable, also it's very much a Palace thing. Ollie was constantly trying to get them higher up the field, but the team are very much still in the Dougie, TP safety first mode, a mentality AP wants to change and changing personnel is the only way.

I thought we settled quickly and the game looked like a Prem v Championship match for the first 25 minutes. We could have been more than just the one goal ahead.

I feared the worst after they equalised because we have almost forgotten how to win games, but after Wilf's goal we dug in and that's what you have to do sometimes. And we had a bit of luck when it was needed, something else that was in short supply in 2016.

I thought Benteke Jnr's introduction was a risk, and we nearly paid for it, other than that I hope this is a platform that can be built on.

Spot on. We followed up the second half against Bournemouth which was very pleasing. Last time they had conceded 2 goals at home was I believe 44 games ago, albeit in the Championship. Unbeaten before the game but have knocked their confidence yesterday. Got a bit of luck and as Pards said controlling the whole game is very rare in this division. A good performance next Sat and we will be moving in the right direction.

Happy with 3 points and sort of controlling most of first half.In second half boro had more of the play but luckily with managed 3 points.
now we gat Stoke on the next one and it is always going to be a difficoult one, but we got to grab another win and i think we will.
