17 Premier League goals in a terrible team, 26 years old and English.

You will struggle to name a better alternative (Remy perhaps, but he's off to Turkey).

As I have pointed out before, Austin mirrors AJ in many ways. You could have written exactly the line above about our former hero -- 20 Premier League goals in a terrible team, mid twenties in age, and English. Off he went to Everton, injuries notwithstanding, never to hit close to the same heights again. I'm not saying Austin wouldn't keep scoring or isn't capable of further improving but I am saying the above line is a poor justification for believing that's he the answer for us. Premiership history is replete with one year wonders.

AJ wouldn't lace austin boots mile apart in ability yes AJ scored 20 goals that season but how many of them were penalties 11? austin only scored 2 from the spot last season and still got 18 goals

What ??? Blasphemy ! Heresy ! Crap !

Sorry mate but no way, AJ had much more to his game, Austin is a good target man finisher but AJ played a pacy game off the shoulder and could do it as a lone striker too as he often did that season ! Regards his penos he won a lot of those himself you know so he was in goalscoring positions anyway before being fouled.

They're 2 very different strikers but I think AJ was better all round, I loved nothing better than seeing AJ being put through on goal, him outpacing the defenders and that feeling of inevitability you got before he stuck it in the onion bag and then we launched into a bout of der-der-der Andy Johnson !

all im saying is take the 11 penalties away (which still stands as a record today will never be beaten) he got 10 from open play austin got 16 from open play and they were not tap ins from 5 yards out some of austin goals were world class austin has already scored 66 more goals in hes career and still only 26 years old he will double whatever AJ total ends up with austin is light years ahead just a higher calibre player fact

21 premier league goals in a relegated team. That will never be beaten

I don't really agree with the comparison. Yes they both had a good single season in the premier league, but AJ's goalscoring record before joining us was poor (8 goals in 83 appearances). He had no goal scoring pedigree.

Austin has scored 120 league goals before he even joined QPR. He has proven himself as a regular goal scorer.

I actually think I'd rather have a 2004/5 AJ in the team than Austin - I could wet myself at the prospect of Cabaye and Puncheon supplying through balls for AJ to run on to - but as a goalscorer, Austin's record is much better.

I know I'm a Palace fan and all but why would some one who has lived most his life down south Want to go nufc over Palace (if wages are the same)
Also Murray out scored him in 2012/13 season in the championship and Murray had one of the best game time to goal ratio in our league!

I wouldn't mind Austin and i know strength in depth and competition but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't sign him.

All the arguments have substance but the underlying point remains; 15 million quid is a much more reasonable fee for someone who's scored 15-20 goals in the Premiership for two or three consecutive seasons than someone who's done it once.

Just five seasons since we discussed Alan Lee! This is truly the best times ever for a norwegian Palacesupporter since december 16, 1972.

Crystal Palace have moved a step closer to signing midfielder Yohan Cabaye from PSG.

He is undergoing his medical in London, and Sky sources understand the fee is between £10million. and £13million

I keep banging on about it - keep Murray and give him the chance to be that man.
Austin is not what we want and he is lazy as well.

I initially thought the same...but now the more i think about it and check out stats etc, his (Austin's) goals per game ratio is very impressive at every level.
i say...get him in!

Murray - based on starts - inc. the crap at the start of the season when Pulis left showed him to be a 19/20 goal a year striker - and he is FREE - we have him.
I do not want Austin - when they played us and we thrashed them - yes - it must have been difficult for him but he did bugger all and sulked not our type of player - send him to West Ham.

I don't blame him on that day. At one point he took a ball from Tarabt, got around the back of Dann and Kelly and looked up to cross and had 0 QPR players in the box with young Abdel still admiring the 5 yd pass he'd just made...gently jogging towards the 'D'.

I am torn on Austin tbh.

He's a finisher Ill give him that but so is GM and so is DG - Is he a better line leader than GM though and as canny ? Is he quicker and as versatile as DG ?

Don't think he is.

Is he worth 15m though ????

I can see comparing Austin to Murray but Dwight Gayle, really? If we sign a striker on a Monday Gayle will be gone by Tuesday! He is so overrated on here it's unreal! Austin is a better version of Murray but I genuinely think Murray will stay and compete with Chamakh Campbell and the new number 9!

I rate Austin and like him both as a footballer and from what I've seen of him, a person.

He has worked very hard to get where he is and gone through the leagues. I don't think anyone can genuinely question his work rate.

As I said earlier in the thread, I think he is overpriced at £15million but if we pay that he ends up here I certainly will not grumble. Would be a great addition to the squad.

Those who say Murray is the man, he may well be but he' can't do 90 mins every game and if we are going to actually consolidate our position we will need 4 very good strikers.

the dignified don't even enter in the game
