This happened during the previous negotiations. Remainers were quick to point the finger at Farage's comments when he wasn't part of the government whilst ignoring some pretty disgraceful comments from EU officials and government politicians. And then of course the EU summit where Mrs May was publicly ignored. Quite childish really of course both sides will disagree but there is no need to start the insults. Edited by Badger11 (17 Feb 2020 12.57pm) France's posturing is all about its domestic politics. Everyone pissed off with higher prices - particularly at petrol pump and home heating etc. Macron is a dead duck but if he can deflect onto making it Britain's fault, some of the French might not burn quite as many cars or break as many shop windows.

Blaming the land of honey and internal wealth? "It said the fall in profits was mainly due to its investment and commercial banking operations in Europe." BBC News - HSBC signals mass job cuts as profits plunge

BBC News - HSBC signals mass job cuts as profits plunge AT least HSBC is doing something about it. There are a lot of European banks (Spanish, Italian and even German) who like Mr Micawber are hoping something will turn up. They are still in hock due to the 2008 crash. In this country despite the politicians protests the banks have been closing branches and reducing staff over many years and this rate will only increase. Most of us rarely go into the local bank although that is bad luck for the elderly. Like many other sectors banks no longer need the vast number of employees as mobile banking has increased massively whilst cash has decreased. The Europeans have still not woken up to the aftermath of the 2008 crash and the increase in electronic transactions they still have thousands of branches. From the BBC today especially for all those who still think we should have open borders for cheap unskilled labour.

They're just another over-exposed s*** bank so no, they're doing nothing about it.

There was an interesting speech last night by David Frost who is the PM's Europe Advisor. Made a strong case that the UK would not be interested in the 'level playing field' mantra being trotted out. But also, from having read the speech in its entirety (which I concede is rather sad of me) what struck me were the references to not only the French Revolution but also comments about the wider notion of other movements in European nations pushing back against the EU hegemony. Now I accept that this is perhaps a case of me reading far too much into it BUT I got a sense that essentially HMG were making a rather guarded threat. We want to a Canda style free-trade agreement and if we don't get it then we will essentially give a great deal of support and succor to other European liberation movements. And given what is going on in France on a week in, week out basis with the mass street protests and violent reaction from the cops, is not a threat to be taken lightly.

I came across the article below on CNN. I thought it provided a new perspective and one you wouldn't read in the Mail or Express. It may help to explain why for many the fight has to go on:-

However CNN is known to tell porkies..
