What is true or untrue is often almost impossible to determine with any certainty at the time and only becomes clearer well after an event is over and often not then. We can have an opinion about what is true, but often that's all it ever is. What I think needs to be rooted out is where stories have been deliberately planted by those with an interest in causing us harm. Genuine discourse between individuals is not an issue. It's the industrial scale propaganda that is then picked up and circulated by those who want the propaganda to be true. But if the truth doesn’t become clear until after the event this propaganda may be true regardless of who posted it; in which case “rooting out” these messages would be propagating a falsehood.

So who exactly are the ones that've been looking at a few individual bricks but not at the wall as a whole?

Not all the press is right wing though. The Guardian could have "trumpeted" the IT story. Or maybe it's just like I said.
The point is that there is another, rather deeper, analysis of why this has happened which seems to me to be worthy of a wider circulation. Maybe in time it will get it.

I think we can trust our intelligence services to be able to identify those actors who use the internet as a weapon to inflict harm on us. If they are in the loop then rooting out any message with a bad actor as it's base source should be possible.

Passions run high between Piers Morgan and Terry Christian. I hope we can all agree that wishing old people would just die and Brexiteers lose their jobs is a bit tasteless and certainly doesn't do the pro EU cause any favours. Edited by Badger11 (28 Jan 2020 11.43am)

Have to think they’re already doing that. I would hope so too but what seems to yet be happening very effectively is the needed action by the social media platforms to use their sophisticated technology to weed out the chains of repeated messages. If they know a story has deliberately been planted to disrupt, distort or mislead then some way needs to be found to destroy not just the roots but all the branches which have sprung from them. Just look at some of the garbage that has been posted about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that has now become accepted by the anxious and insecure types, who form a significant part of the Trump base, as completely true. It's this that concerns me. This is turning into the post truth age and that, ultimately, is in none of our interests.

Edited by Badger11 (28 Jan 2020 11.43am) They are both opinionated prats using over the top statements to make their points. I am quite sure Terry Christian doesn't wish anyone any personal harm just as those who introduced austerity didn't want anyone to personally suffer.
