The thing is that a genuine third force in British politics could emerge from this with the only logical grouping being effectively English nationalism. England voted overwhelmingly, on a constituency basis, to leave the EU. And if we pushed back into it, or as near dammit, then there will be a backlash. Many of the Brexit focused parties are talking about trying to unite (not sure that will happen but it is been discussed) but suspect it could potentially be a new-comer. Farage is making noises and would be the obvious leader. Also the Reform Party are claiming a surge in membership. But every action has a reaction. With politics perhaps the truest expression of that. And in certain eyes any party like that will be tagged as far right for some reason!

Throw every label they want. But at that level of politics, nothing happens without a reason. There is always somebody, somewhere, stirring the pot. And the spoon in this case is within the Conservative Party. Labour and Starmer are just playing dumb and fair enough. Why the chaos? And why Hunt? Of all the people to put into post, the one most likely to rub all kinds of naturally Conservative people up the wrong way. Also reversing the tax cuts but keeping the lifting on bankers' bonuses. You could not design a policy more likely to rile all kinds of people. I am convinced this is all deliberate. That they want out of power and want Starmer in place to take all the s*** coming. The tactic only makes sense if you think the next big move is towards rejoining the EU and the potential backlash. Edited by Matov (19 Oct 2022 7.54pm)

Having watched Farage this evening getting excited about today's events and drawing his convoluted opinions about where we are and where we are going, I heard many echoes of the ideas from the right which are being posted here. Whilst much of it was predictable "liberal" bashing, he is though right about something, even if his choice of words isn't. This isn't a "coup". Coups happen in one move. It is though a rejection of the failed policies of the right of the Tory party and of those who decided to push them hard at an extremely inappropriate time, without any sense of fiscal responsibility because of blind ideology. This wing of the Tory party, and their sympathisers elsewhere, like Farage, have been shown to be as unrealistic as many of us always thought they were. The ERG are gradually being removed from positions of power and influence and replaced by seasoned professionals with safe hands. In a moment of crisis we need safe hands, ears that hear and minds that reflect before acting. As this group includes most of those joined at the hip to Brexit because of ideology, and Brexit's failure is also being laid bare at this time of crisis, Farage is also right about something else. We will soon be making our peace with the EU. Not yet actually re-joining, but reducing the rhetoric, offering compromises and building bridges rather than knocking them down. We are in a very deep hole, which is going to cause most of us pain, and some of us a great deal of pain. The government will get the blame, even for those things it had no control over, and even if the people actually responsible for those they were responsible for, have been replaced. For those reasons everyone, Farage included, expects a Labour victory at the next GE. I so hope they are wrong and the replacement government which is now being assembled manages to distance itself from the right sufficiently to save the Party and retain power, even if in a coalition. I fear those hopes will be dashed and that the Tories will split. If that happens then my next hope is that the realignment in UK politics I have longed for will finally happen. Interesting, if difficult, times lie ahead.

We can help steer the ship, rather than just sitting in the observation lounge, complaining about sea sickness and the views. Enthusiastic partnership is what is required, not half-hearted acceptance.

This is quite extraordinary. [Tweet Link]
For a Tory MP to be speaking in this manner...people saying it is 50-50 whether Truss is still in office by the morning. But I still struggle around this implosion. All for cutting taxes? And whilst we might think things are mayhem here in the UK, over in France they have some massive problems with fuel shortages (the Guardian was quoting 28% of garage forecourts with no fuel) due to industrial action along with mass protests. That does not excuse what we are seeing here but the UK is relatively stable. Unemployment at an all time low, last quarters economic growth showed a slight increase. Yes, inflation is just plain daft but that is not uncommon at the moment. This entire 'crisis' seems manufactured to me but I also concede, that could just be me being me. Enough self-awareness to admit that.

I now see a rejoining in all but name of the EU. I have given up on national sovereignty. The Red Wall have been disenfranchised. The remoaners were out for Boris from the start and got him. This goes back to having May replace Cameron and her reluctant " negotiations " which Barnier has described in summary as incompetent. It's extraordinary that the Conservatives have gone from a huge majority to an existential next general election. As someone said, it's Lewis Carroll stuff
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |
