I think if Labour had taken Corbyn's position immediately after the referendum the public might have agreed with him. Get a deal and go back to the public. However they dilly dallied and didn't come up with it until this year by which time the public just saw it as yet another delay. Sometimes in politics it's not always about being right its about being right at the right time. They should do what they should have done in the first place. Respect the result of the referendum and let MP's have a free vote.

Timing is everything and Labour were neither fish nor fowl for 3 years beyond their stated intention to oppose any Tory deal before it had even been negotiated.

My main concern at the moment is that given the size of the majority Boris' brexit will be so "soft" as to be ineffective in making us competitive and therefore lay the seeds to an argument to re-join the EU. The WA he's negotiated shows all the signs of tying us in to all kinds of EU commitments and I don't think he has the guts to leave on WTO even if the EU force him towards that. I still think there are way too many "one nation" (the modern interpretation being "wet" The main counterbalance here is that Boris will want to keep the huge number of working classes he's gained on side and he needs to recognize this should put him in a more socially conservative direction.

Johnson will want the sovereignty aspect of Brexit and I have little doubt as his commitment to that. However, on immigration he's always been relatively liberal compared to most Brexiteers.....He's part Turkish and famously or infamously advocated for Turkey's integration into the EU. That said, I can't see the Tory party standing for 'freedom of movement' especially since this is principally what the leave vote was most about. Politics is fascinating at the moment and full of possibility. We will soon discover the priorities for a Johnson government outside of Brexit and we get to see a fight on the left for its direction (though the dice is heavily loaded). I agree with you....Johnson comes across as a 'wet' in old Tory speak. What worries me a bit is that he wants to be liked a bit too much....which he will discover means that he'll be encouraged to continually compromise.....and he should note what that did for Corbyn. Well done Remainers; you’ve sealed your own fate. Those that called the electorate stupid and racist, when they were neither, just because they disagreed on our membership of a political union, will now have to face the consequences. You were warned, but as usual you knew better. Don’t expect any compromises now.

Even then they aren't interested in the better brain. I think we can safely predict that Labour won't be electing anyone the Tories have to worry about. I'd be worried if they elected someone like Caroline Flint but even that's not available to them....Instead one of them is suing her......I totally believe Flint by the way. It certainly sounds like something Thornberry would say.

And breathe out. Its over. Yes, probably some twists and turns to come and I have my doubts about Johnson and his plans which I suspect will leave me feeling short-changed but as things stand, we are now definitely leaving the EU on January 31st. Democracy has survived. Just. Lost friends, lost faith, in short feel rather battered and bruised by the whole process but finally my vote, along with 17 million plus others, has been rendered valid. A disgrace it has taken this long and I still hold a very real and deep loathing for those who sort to scupper the result on June 23rd 2016 but today it does not matter. They failed. Miserably and utterly. But 2020 is a new year and a new start. Not sure how we heal as a nation but at least we can now move on. A period in British history which will not reflect well on a lot of people who really should have known better. But they did not achieve what they set out to do. Need to always keep that in mind.
