Macron ‘stealth’ tax on ‘unpopular’ British expats welcomed in France.

A whopping 60% surcharge on their council tax equivalent.

It's right to tax property and wealth in my view, and not just hard-pressed wage earners.

Only on holiday homes, those of us who live here and contribute via our taxes are not included in this

I think they have a point. The Welsh are doing something like this as well leading to moans from people who own holidays homes there.

I'm sorry but we have a chronic housing shortage in this country we should be discouraging people from buying second homes.

Yep, the situation where properties are brought up and left empty and unused needs to go.

i spent a week in a touristy town in Western France. The whole suburbs of the town was nice empty houses....a Necropolis in all but name.

owned by Parisians or Londoners ? who can tell. But i reckon there is a ton of similar towns everywhere....Cornwall or Brittany.

Ireland has been a major beneficiary of the EU over the years I guess someone has decided it's time they paid for the party.

So 2.6 billion up to 4.1 billion.
Imagine how much would have been demanded from us. If we hadn’t sensibly left. Our hmg would’ve paid up straight away the knobs. This was always on the cards with uncontrolled immigration and high welfare payments in the eu. Ukraine is a snip of that.

Agreed

The Welsh charge a big increase in Council tax for a second home. It’s about to kill the holiday trade. A house is classed as a second home unless it is let for more than 182 days per year. Almost no holiday lets can achieve that so many people are selling up.

The EU didn't need globalists and neo liberals selling its people down the river.

What it needed was more Orbans.

The Welsh have identified the problem and are , hopefully, sorting it. Holiday homes are killing communities where empty properties do not support local shops or communities.
Meanwhile the Brexit / EU agreement is due for review in 2025, a point that Sir Kier is currently promoting.
Unfortunately the UK Fishing Rights have already been sold for a bag of beans.
And no-one seems able to have a solution to unregulated immigration by small boats.

I disengage, I turn the page.
