On the two child cap. We have to encourage British people to have more children, but at the same time, the cost of welfare payments is far too high. Truthfully, responsible parents tend to produce more responsible children. We need a generation who are better equipped for employment and social responsibility.

It is not a matter of cost but what society you want to live in, it is also immoral to drive children into poverty with all its consequences. And all the problems caused will have to be picked up by in other ways by other agencies, it is actually exprensive to make people poor, a typical mindless austerity policy. Starmer was lucky the voters were desperate to get rid of the tories, he actually performed worse than Corbyn in votes cast. He and his chancellors argument is b****x, which is why they have resorted to this.

Steeleye - if you can't afford to have children then don't have them.

If you want more British children and you want to give them the best chance to grow into productive adults, then you need to reduce child poverty - it really is as simple as that. It doesn't even have to be a left-wing argument if looking after children isn't enough motivation for some - it's just economically sensible.

I suspect he doesn't oppose the grid linking up the wind farms so long as that link is underground cables and not overground pylons. Don't you?

I don't think anyone wants child poverty but remember, it is relative poverty. I don't think the current situation of two parents working and still not being able to afford a decent standard of living is acceptable. It is not sensible for businesses to survive only by paying people rubbish wages and creating awful working conditions. Let them go out of business. Aside from that, people need to manage their money better. How many smoke? Drink too much? Gamble? Eat takeaway three times a week? Their kids need to come first.
