When the Soviet Union fell apart, Russia was told that NATO would not expand towards its borders. Assurances given. And now? NATO exercises right up against it. Russia is by far the sinned against rather than the sinner, at least on this issue. I have recently been trying to make sense of what is going on in terms of recent gas finds/pipe line construction. Fascinating, at least to a saddo like me, along with being bloody confusing because there are all kinds of complexitiy and nuances to the wider-geo politics but essentially it all boils down to control of pipe-lines. Huge recent finds for both Turkey and Iran, along with all kinds of shenanigans in the Eastern Mediteranian linked to the supply and sourcing of it. Its a geo-political gold-mine, if you like that kind of thing, and given the amount of nations with an interest in it, more akin to 3-D chess than anything else I have ever come accross. No, NATO said nothing like this, it was actually said by Gorbachev, likely to assure his own party.

There's a drip, drip, drip. Johnson won't deny being there as photos of the occasion are likely to start popping up. There's no defending such staggering hypocrisy really. As for whether he'll actually go I'd say it's a 50/50. Rishi Sunak is favourite to replace him, but he doesn't exactly scream leadership material. Edited by BlueJay (11 Jan 2022 1.11pm) -> [Link]

Not a party. Apparently Boris was "ambushed with a cake". I'm sure something similar happened during the other 16 parties too. Edited by BlueJay (25 Jan 2022 10.17pm)

I heard at lunchtime that it was rumoured that the Gray report was not going to be published for several weeks, in the hope that by then there would be other matters dominating the news. I have no idea if there's any truth in it. It doesn't appear anywhere else I have seen.

I mostly look at the 'money where your mouth is' odds, which suggests things aren't particularly getting any better for Boris. He's half way out of the door. For what it's worth the Conservatives are still currently favourite to win the next election though, so a lot of the anger is pointed squarely at the Prime Minister.

As I cannot see any chance of an outright Tory win with Johnson left in the chair that will surely be the thing that concentrates the minds of their MPs. People have seen through him and I don't think there is any chance of a recovery. If he stays the best they could hope for is to be the senior partner in a coalition, which would be a very difficult deal to make. He couldn't survive that. The others wouldn't accept it. So I think he will be given a red card, probably quite soon, but perhaps he will be allowed a little more tactical rope. The next interesting question is who replaces him. We definitely don't need a clone, or another chancer. So not Gove, or Rabb. Nor Truss. Sunak looks favourite but has he got either the necessary all round experience or gravitas? My own choice would be Hunt. He is as honest as the day is long, very experienced, measured and sensible. He would lead differently and could build trust again. He is more the kind of one nation Tory I admire and could vote for. The Brexiteers would hate it, but swallow hard and still vote Tory, on the basis there is no longer anywhere else to go. With Labour all but down and out Hunt could stop, at least some, of the red wall crumbling. If the Tories want to win they need people like me to vote for them. So choose Hunt.

Except the expenses scandals. Oh, and breaching anti-money laundering legislation. Not forgetting the dodgy discount on his 7 flats. Oh and nepotistically planting John Gummer’s niece in the civil service when they were making massive cuts. And the tax scam involving getting property in lieu of dividends. Still, the health service loved him, only 222,991 signatures on a petition requesting a vote of no confidence.

Boris is not a good leader. But, come on, this witch hunt is so transparent. Cummings went away to avoid covid, stayed at his family estate, and drove to Barnard Castle, all without contact with any other people. All of that is bullsh¦t. Cummings slags off the PM.... repeatedly....after being removed from his post.... must be telling the truth this time?... No? 17 parties at Downing Street? Seriously? That didn't get noticed earlier than now? That's almost one a month since the pandemic began. And nobody noticed.... Just, think about it.

He was heavily criticised for his behaviour at the time... and of course not particularly defended by those around him routinely doing much worse themselves. Quote

Really the only other take is to say 'I simply don't care about threats of fine or arrest for meeting (or indeed mourning) family and friends while my elected representatives routinely did precisely as they pleased'. If that's fine with you then great, but it pays to realise that this farcical political re-imagining of multiple parties is a laughable and desperate PR move, not something people are genuinely expected to believe. If you wrote a comedy for publication/screenplay on the antics in this Government, it would be rejected on the grounds that there has to be an element of believability, even in the most extreme farce. Yep, i'm angry all this alcohol and food went on expenses and was funded by you and me But I've never heard of any workplace culture that included so much alcohol, whilst making important Government policy decisions. And people died, and are still dying, and people had their careers taken from them because of the actions of these c-units who were pished off their tlts. Not saying a lot of stuff wouldn't have happened anyway, but i don't want my future decided by these alcoholic 'untouchables'.
I disengage, I turn the page. |
