Jesus what a s***show, everyone's to blame for that, Brighton playing better than us, Roy's crap tactics, Palace's awful performance and someone that should never be allowed to wear a ref's shirt ever again. 100% agree

A few mates of mine were saying "phew" after last week, and the United and Arsenal games, but we have definitely got problems. Luka tried possibly 15 times to blast a pass into the middle of their box, it got us nowhere. PVA was seriously poor tonight coming forward, he and AWB are absolutely vital if we want to play this way and he tried countless passes and flicks, and virtually none of them came off. AWB at least can take a man on but barely did it, elected for backwards or sideways short balls with Townsend which invariably dont go anywhere. We have one of the best dribblers in the league but when he got the ball their defense was rigid and static and we couldn't get him the ball in the transition, and basically he was totally wasted tonight. The one time we got him 1 on 1 running at a defender and he gets a pen. We consistently tried to play it through the middle in the final third and it was childsplay for Brighton to contain and deal with it. The middle of the park from 40 yards out to their goalline was totally congested and full of Brighton players. There was no way through at all except if we have Messi and Xavi to carve them up - we dont. The tactics tonight were totally ineffective and it was a seriously poor performance in many ways. We tried time and again to plough through the middle of them and it got us nowhere, time after time after time. We must, MUST find a way to utilize Zaha and get him running at players, long ball, reverting to 442 and not using wing backs, just something......we have to do something differently because that was total rubbish and we have no hope of carving them open that way. There has to be a physical / aerial threat as well. Unless your at the absolute top the easiest thing to play against is a team of slow midgets who pass too much.

I came along after 15 minutes. Obviously 0-0 and Palace seemed to be playing well. The ref’s decision over the pen was a MASSIVE mistake and then he awarded a corner that lead to the second goal when it was clearly a goal kick, Duffy was correctly sent off and so Brighton played a 10 man defence for an hour and got a good but slightly fortunate third goal. That all said there were some very below par play from many who normally are far better. Stand up Tomkins, Milhalovic, AWB, and Townsend for varying degrees of ineptitude. That all said overall it was not our night. I am sure Briighton are crowing and delighted. Fair play. We have them at Selhurst later in the season - hopefully on a plate! But for now let’s move on. We got beaten away. Not the end of the world. PS Hats off to Glenn for not celebrating. Those who say forget about him are wrong. IMO Pardew lost all credibility in forcing him out!
Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time! |

Tonight I think just about everything went wrong. The slightly worrying thing is that we could not break them down in the second half and continue to struggle to score.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Kevin Friend is unplayable in that form' by Midlands Eagle A commentator said that old chestnut today, about 'sometimes it's harder to play against ten men'. What a stunningly unoriginal thing to say. A more accurate observation is that Kevin Friend is unplayable when he's in this sort of form. Nick the ball off a Brighton player, with absolutely no contact made, and he gives them a penalty anyway. Glen Murray goes down under a shoulder charge, kicking the ball off at the same time. But because the crowd call for a penalty., Friend decides to compromise and give Brighton a corner. He doesn't give Zaha a free kick when he's clearly fouled and tries to stay on his feet. Kevin Friend was everyone for Brighton, breaking up the play here, creating chances for them here. The Brighton club shop doesn't seem to have any replica Kevin Friend referee kits. But that's because they probably sold out! What's your favourite Kevin Friend story?

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Kevin Friend is unplayable in that form' by Midlands Eagle That penalty decision was clearly wrong and it changed the whole game. At that point we were getting back into things and as soon as we were a goal down they were all behind the ball and we started to panic. Now we could and should be dealing better with conceding a goal at that point but at if he gives a correct decision we probably continue to sort ourselves out and go in at half time 0 - 0. He continued to help weed throughout the second half. It just looked as if he had to "compensate" them for unfortunately having to send Duffy off (a matter in which he had no choice).

I've just got home from the game. It was truly awful - particularly as I was sitting in the home section and had to make a mild effort to look as if I was enjoying it! We could have played for another 2 hours and we wouldn't have scored. Wilf's histrionics were embarrasing and he really offered nothing this evening. The home support were just laughing and jeering him. I agree with those who have excused Townsend from the criticism given to the rest of the team for their inept showing. He gave his all and never stopped trying.
