yeah, real hard to see where anyone of african descent, anywhere in the world would be kind of upset by seeing a flag celebrating the attempt to keep that policy in place.

I disagree that there are honorable reasons for displaying the Confederate flag, I disagree with any assertion that the Confederate flag never has white supremacist intonations when waved in Europe, I respect that there are Teddy Boy etc. cultural phenomena in Britain that have paid homage to the Confederate flag, blah blah blah. And yes I also think it is a cool looking flag. But any/all of you who at this point in history are attempting to defend the Confederate flag or celebrate how truly free are those who wave it (or rebellious or whatever)....you're on the wrong side of history/good taste and are embarrassing yourselves. It's too late in the game to still be misunderstanding things. "In 2013, a school in Canada had to ban the flag after schoolchildren began wearing it. “I didn't even know it was racist,” one student told the Toronto Star. “Then I Googled it.”" I find all this talk of ignorance pretty rich coming from an American. That's no dig at you, you seem to be pretty switched on and knowledgeable, but your countrymen do have a reputation for not knowing, or caring, about what happens outside your borders. Are you really surprised that most people here weren't aware of the offence that flag can cause, or that so many don't really care if a few Americans do get offended? As I have said before, it doesn't belong at Selhurst and I'm glad it's gone, but I object to your assertion that those who continue to use it are doing so to be controversial or because they are ignorant. The fact is the flag is, and will continue to be, popular all over the world with various people for all different reasons. That may be offensive to some people, but that offense won't change anything, nor does it reflect the reasons those flags are being waved.

blank: I'm glad you liked the cartoon. I have been awarding ZE IRON CROSS to cats and toddlers and old people and all sorts of unwilling (ungrateful) recipients since I saw that as a child. It usually is just my palm over their face, but sometimes it's a padlock chain or links of sausage. nairb: that is an incredible chronicle and the best interactive piece of information sharing I've seen on the web in a long time. blank: I am not upset with HF for having had the flag in the patchwork. I am not upset with 68 year old Teddy Boys who think it means that Johnny Cash was cool. The the Staines Massive thinks that it just means yeeeee hawwwww Dukes of Hazzard, that is not upsetting. And it doesn't matter to me whether or not halfway educated English people think it's funny that I find the Confederate flag offensive. I am pretty sure I got my posting privileges revoked on the BBS because I among others would not stop sparring with middle-aged or middle-age-minded rightwing jingoistic nitwits. My general point--and yes, I am being a hardliner about this-- is that there is no good or righteous reason to wave that flag and I am going to get in anyone's face that does it with a bunch of "here are the reasons why you should not wave that flag in 2015" rhetoric. And if some pit head from Wisbech wants to be trifling about it on the internet, I am fully content to call them an idiot.

I also think it's poor form to fetishize the Soviet flag (ask Estonians how that flag makes them geel), I think Che Guevara idolization is corny and rather tasteless, and I don't even think I would wear my olive drab West German surplus sweater anymore no matter if I thought it was cool in 1992. And I agree, most Americans have no idea what is going on across town much less across the world. And neither do most people in any country. I'm lucky that I've been able to study and travel, and that I've lived places where people from other parts of the world live, and listen to them talk about their lives, etc. But no amount of excuses about what is/is not innocent cultural appropriation will make the Confederate flag okay, and 100% F U if you disagree after having things have been explained to you (not you yourself, blanksight, since you seem to understand why it's wrong on some fundamental level) by anyone who has any understanding of Black American experience and American race history/politics.

Well, a 100% F U right back at you if you are going to use that language. You actually make me want to wave a flag I have no interest in just to piss off people like you. I guess we should ban all those Dukes of Hazards episodes....They obviously were racists with no knowledge of history. Westernised slavery was a crime against humanity of enormous proportions. However, don't tell me what I do and don't understand about history, black/white or whatever you overly arrogant and assuming person. Not everything sees the world in your binary colours and while this country remains free I'll support the right of a person to say they don't support slavery and wave a flag that others don't like.

I think you should definitely make a point of exercising your freedom to get it all wrong publicly. Big up yourself in your embarrassing white privilege libertarian hell world.

Because it illustrates that I'm not living in a 'white privileged world' if my boss can be Asian. Did you not read his post?

I dont think he was right to bring your colour into the discussion. But the rest of it seems fair. I'm afraid you dont have to have a white boss to live in a world where there is white privilege - in my opinion. But this is another discussion for another thread. Happily this now is in general talk - which I normally avoid. See ya I'm off to the Palace/Transfer forums

But there is also non white privilege....The whole racial point is ridiculous and one he brought up. The richest man in Britain is Asian....Asians are five percent of the population yet contribute ten percent of GDP and that's great.....He singled out race I didn't. Yet you say you had read his post....Yet you questioned my post, not his, saying why skin colour mattered....And then you go.....Mmmmm...Yeah, seems fair that.

Yeah, that's good it got moved. And stirling, I don't have the time or desire to explain to you how backward it is for you to carry on like this or imagine out loud wearing the Confederate flag to piss people off. Good luck with everything, you sad man.
