Sorry but you are really so wrong I can't believe you actually watch/listen/read about transfer news?!? You really have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm not going to get into an argument. I've explained as articulately as I can how it works. Let's leave it at that. Up to readers if they think you're a more credible source of information. Re: Shaw, when a club wants to buy a player they talk to him first (just like any job interview). If, in that conversation, the player makes it clear that when contract time comes around he'll be wanting a rise to 90K a week then the prospective new employer may well say "no thanks". Is the correct answer. As pointed out by Dave which Syd decided to ignore. Syd, perhaps you should stick to rugby, you really haven't much idea about football

Syd, perhaps you should stick to rugby, you really haven't much idea about football Contracts in European football are between a specific club and a player, and are non-transferable. Plus no club is allowed to approach a player under contract to another club, without first asking the club he is contracted to, to do so comes under the heading "Illegal Approach", clubs normally just don't do that the penalty's are to high, agents are usually the ones who turn the heads of players. I thought Syd was usually an intelligent poster! Contracts in football, like in the real world, are terminated once you leave, and you have to sign a new contract when you join! I can't believe this is even under discussion... As people have pointed out, you are not buying the contract, you are buying them OUT of their contract, so they can sign a new one with you. The longer a contract a player is on, the less chance they will leave for free, so a club will hold out for a higher fee. If a player is not wanted by the club, a long contract will not make him easier to sell. The buyer will be in prime position as they know the selling club wants to get the player off their books so will offer a lower price.

That is how a transfer, in the game of association football, works. As everyone else has stated, clubs have to talk to clubs to get permission to talk to the players first.

Edited by Sg Bilko (06 Aug 2014 12.52pm) That goes on all the time. It might be an 'illegal approach' but its very difficult to prove if neither club nor player admit to it. Do you honestly believe Real Madrid had absolutely no contact with Ronaldo or his representatives BEFORE the agreed a fee with Man United? Really? Very naïve if so.

Do you honestly believe Real Madrid had absolutely no contact with Ronaldo or his representatives BEFORE the agreed a fee with Man United? Really? Very naïve if so. Naïve definitely not, do you know how it works in football because I do, and it's not like in the legal system where you are innocent until proven guilty, in football it's the other way round if an FA brings a charge against you, it's up to you to prove your not guilty, and that's hard when those on the other side of the table are not listening, that's why very few walk out of an FA hearing without some sort of penalty. [Link] And yes clubs do get punished for an Illegal Approach, both Liverpool, and Everton, plus Celtic, and Arsenal also Chelsea have been found guilty, both Dwight York and Ashley Cole were found guilty of the same offence. Oh and by the way yes I do think Real Madrid did everything by the book in the Ronaldo and Bale transfers, if there was any wrong doing it was by the agents, not the clubs, if you think the FA and the FL don't keep a close eye on clubs and players, then your the naïve one, because they do, you would be surprised what they find out or know, everything and I mean everything is tightly controlled.

When a player is on a contract that contract determines his terms and conditions of employment, including salary. When it comes to a player sale the only influence a contract will have is the asking price. Someone with 3 years left on a contract will normally command a bigger fee than someone of similar ability with 6 months left on their contract.
