Trump quite rightly makes the point that if the US has tens of billions to give away (with no oversight by the way) to the Ukrainian war then it should have tens of billions to construct safe schools with single points of entry and internal armed response. He says the Democrats blocked any changes when he was president.

It's a salient point.

I think we need to avoid a rush to judgement over this, especially viewed from here, until all the facts are known.

Was the shooter actively shooting the kids, whilst the Police stood by and did nothing? Or was he just threatening them? If the latter, they might have decided not to precipitate a crisis and were awaiting reinforcements, trained negotiators or dog teams.

Without body armour (which
the gunman was wearing) any response needed to be proportionate to the immediate threat.

It seems he was outside the school for a while before entering. Was he making threats then? Were they trying to talk him out of being stupid?

A country where you can buy a machine gun but can't put a tenner on Trap 2 at Romford.

It's not salient at all. It's political. The gun lobby in the USA puts politics above the lives of children.

No-one in their right mind can justify the possession of military weapons by ordinary citizens, whatever their mental state at the time of purchase. Nor can there be any justification for the possession of any weapon without thorough, regular, checks on both the person in possession, and the location and state of the weapon.

This situation in the USA is in a hopeless mess, with a complete divide between two radically different views on how society operates. That it has been allowed to develop to this level is a complete failure of government. It should have been tackled 50 years ago.

I read much the same story late last evening.

I anticipate more detail when inquests and enquiries are held.

Tragic for the families, but also terrible that every schoolchild in the USA needs to be taught how to respond to a shooting threat in a place where they should feel safe and happy.

The problem with gun licencing: If you only allow people who are not criminals to hold them you still will have a problem.

I know a few people who fit that category (generally law abiding) however I would not trust them with a pair of safety scissors let along a gun.

If a country ends up so peculiarly full of hatred and fear that little kids have to scurry past metal detectors and armed guards through fear of being shot, in order to learn their ten times tables, then perhaps they're better off just not leaving their homes to begin with. Trump is obliged to state this view to the audience in question, so realistically he's not even offered an opinion.

Maybe in certain situations 'more guns' can offer certain security, but this town spent a massive amount of their budge on policing and it didn't achieve much of anything. There will always be a human component. What happens when the person tasked with protecting the kids goes postal? Lots of questions. Armed local response can fail. Essentially it did here and Federal agents had to make their own decision, as local police wanted to wait longer and longer [Link]

When assualt weapons were banned shooting dropped, when it ended up it went back up. I'm sure we'll get lots of 'correlation' arguments, but really the single most sensible move would be to ban or make it very difficult to buy guns that belong primarily in the military rather than the hands of an 18 year old boy. Taking away guns is never going to happen. Just make the change going forward. Acknowledging realities that no-ones politics should cloud is the way to move forward. Of course that won't happen though, as this is America and people are encouraged to operate by mentalities that drag them emotionally this way and that to their own and others detriment.

The single most effective and healthy thing the individual there could do is turn off their TV, unplug the Internet and concentrate on living life rather than buy into narratives. Buying into different flavours and brands of rage isn't good for your health. It's just the modern day crack most are into.

In the 80s Australia had quite a problem with guns. In Sydney shootings were a regular occurrence and Melbourne went the same way in the 90s.
Their response was quite effective.

It's certainly a logical response. It would work in most countries, but I think it'd be a bloody mess if a government tried to do this is the States. It's just not a 'well' country.

In many countries that you wouldn't even expect many of most civilians are armed. They just don't treat their gun like it's an extention to their cock. The best they can do stateside I feel is a ban on gun sales going forward that there is no sane argument for owning in the first place. Even that will be used as some kind of 'they will take away your guns next!!' slippery slope though. Many Americans essentially both prop up both the mentality and method of these regular school shootings occuring. Then their dim witted answer is 'more of the same please'. If that's what you want, unfortunately that's what you get.

And now Australians who protest against government measures like vaccine mandates and travel restrictions are subject to random beatings, batton rounds and directed energy weapons.
