I don't know what 'British values' are! Yet it is a phrase repeatedly wheeled out by the establishment as some undefined code of morality to which true Brits can claim ownership and to which 'Johny Foreigner' should aspire. Hence the quotation marks!

I think, if pressed, those who coined it might include tolerance, fairplay and a sense of respect for others rather than isolationism, self interest and xenophobia!

Self interest is an inherent human trait. I know of no organization or indeed individual who doesn't have it.

Ukip aren't pushing isolationism....I don't support isolationism myself. We will still trade and cooperate with Europe......We are in Nato.......It isn't 'if you aren't with us, you are against us'.

Ukip aren't pushing xenophobia....Of course there are some members who are and are just jumping on the bandwagon....But they don't represent what the party is about. I know of foreign born people who have issues with the 'extent' of immigration, one polish women here in Wisbech who has been here twenty years.....It's about numbers and control of borders. Ukip isn't interested in stopping immigration. Immigration is important for many reasons....But an open door is damaging.

Every country should control its borders and its national interest.

UKIP may not be pushing xenophobia according to you (I disagree with you on this) however they do seem to be followed by a lot of xenophobes.

No Nick, its Ukip’s detractors like yourself who are keen (almost desperate in fact) to make them out to be xenophobes. As a man of mixed heritage there is no way I would follow Ukip if the party were anti immigrants or had raciest overtones. All Ukip and their followers wish for is a sensible immigration policy where we can control the number of entries into this country, much like Australia or most other non EU countries employ. This will in turn lead to being able to plan for better housing, school places, NHS etc.
Let me ask you Nick, do you think that the Australian government are xenophobes for allowing controlled immigration instead of an open door policy? ( a simple yes or no answer will do)

I don't have to make them out as xenophobes, they do it all by themselves.

No Nick - yet again, you are just wrong. Bit of a worry really, the likes of our country’s children being taught by such misguided fools

Nobody from any of the parties is advocating an 'open door' policy. To do so would be political suicide and clearly mistakes have been made in the past.
However Farage cannot express a view on NHS, education, employment or the economy without placing blame at the door of immigration or membership of Europe, when the issues are clearly more complex than that.
In addition, 'Self interest' may or may not be an inherent human trait. But many 'basic instincts' can and have been moderated, adapted or suppressed for the greater social good.
If, as I do, you believe that a civilised society is one where all needs are respected and we develop a sense of social responsibility rather than ruthlessly pursuing a policy of self interest, then we should be striving to develop a broader outlook.

I blame Maggie Thatcher!!

As for the aussie points system, sounds fair enough, as long as everyone, from whereever is given equal weighting.

I don’t think Ukip have made any more or any less racist/xenophobic comments over the years than the other parties. Look at Diana Abbott. Imagine if her racist comments had been made by a Ukip member? You would be having a field day, but we conveniently forget about these because she's a left wing black women.
Nick I have a mental picture of you painted by your ridiculous comments and its somewhere between Rick from the Young Ones and citizen Smith. Maybe you should stop listing to your Cliff Richard LPs for a while and take a look around at the real world you mate. Happy Easter.

Good post and sums up my position. One thing to acknowledge that immigration needs reforming, another to blame Johnny Foreigner for all our ills.

the dignified don't even enter in the game

Chaos round the corner?

"Voters who do not give Europe a thought from one month to the next do not realise how large it looms in the rightwing imagination. To Conservative minds, the EU is an aggressive imperial power. Fighting it compares with the fights against Hitler and Stalin. The EU is all that stands between us and the chance of becoming a sovereign, unregulated country: a new Victorian Britain.

The right has fallen for a mixture of half-truths – the European Union undoubtedly diminished national sovereignty – and fantasy. It is not only the leaders and partisans of Ukip who are in a dreamland; David Cameron has been unable to fight Ukip, because large sections of the Tory party agree and the entire Tory press are in it too."
