My God, talk about bending the truth. But hey ho, I guess we voted to become the 51st State so let's get on with it then. We're quite used to short-termism, appalling bureaucracy and politicised law nowadays after the past 13 years anyway.

He is merely pointing out that the EU economic performance against the US has been poor for decades. He also points out that the UK is suffering from the same economic stagnation as the EU. So I think it is valid to point out to people that whether we are in or out of the EU we still have the same growth problems.

Every country makes their own now. Although I generally prefer the English ones. American and Irish ones too hoppy - no balance, no tradition. There's the odd Lidl and Aldi ones I like.

Yes, we'd have been much more secure in the EU. Some 59,000 companies are projected to fall into insolvency in France this year, falling to 57,000 in 2024. In the UK the figures are 28,500 this year and 31,000 in 2024, according to research by Allianz Trade.

Senior tory and labour figures meeting behind the scenes to assess the Brexit damage. I'd love to be a fly on the wall.

Interesting opinion article in the Guardian. I'm not sure I agree with all of his points but I think the general idea that the EU is simply a larger form of nationalism makes sense.

I think it depends on how you define "nationalism" which has many meanings; Hitler was a nationalist just as the SNP are in Scotland - however, clearly entirely different perspectives. Anyway, as you say, an interesting and seemingly well informed article.

Anyway, as you say, an interesting and seemingly well informed article. Yup, it gave me some thought. There are plenty of pro EU supporters who hate the "little Englander" Brexit nationalists and yet if they are honest all they are doing is swapping one form of nationalism for another. Back in the day one settlement would despise that lot the other side of the hill and would protect their own settlement and way of life. As the population increased the 2 settlements would merge into one village and then they would despise the village a few miles away. Eventually people in a district or region would band together until finally you have a nation. The EU is just an extension of this natural progression, as we have seen it protects and promotes those inside it's borders to the detriment of those outside. Edited by Badger11 (28 Aug 2023 9.46am)

The negatives briefly quoted for the US mean I greatly admire that country... but from afar.
