You often play the charade of being a One Nation Tory but you dismiss The Spectator, have you read it - too many long words? The Spectator used to be well written and mainstream conservative, even somewhat liberal, in tone. Whenever I read anything from it now it seems to have drifted quite markedly to the right. It takes an anti-EU position which is something I fundamentally disagree with and which makes it an out of touch relic, rather than a progressive voice.

When Corny passes one might speculate that his punishment will be that he has to service all the gas appliances in Hell for the rest of time.

The Spectator, whose readership is booming, hasn't drifted anywhere, the Tory Party has drifted markedly to the left. It supported the Leave vote, as did the majority of those that voted. 'Progressive'? A meaningless word these days - progressing towards what? Edited by georgenorman (05 Jan 2024 5.07pm)

'Progressive'? A meaningless word these days - progressing towards what? Edited by georgenorman (05 Jan 2024 5.07pm) The Tories have drifted left? That’s news to me and I suspect to most of my age. It seems to me they have been trapped by the likes of the ERG into following policies they know lead nowhere. The sooner they return to their traditional roots the better their chances of survival as a major party. That requires dumping the hard right element before they dump them. Most people now regret we voted to Leave. Responsible, sensible observers acknowledge this, admit they were wrong and now argue for a reversal. Has The Spectator? Progressive is far from meaningless. It means to go forward, not to stand still or go backwards. It means to make progress. Those who don’t are destined to fall behind.

Why you persist with these childish, meaningless references only you know. That you find them amusing is much funnier than any kind of obscure humour they might possess. So carry on. If I fail to detect anything useful in your comments at least they can make me laugh.

My “passing” will,I trust, be a while yet. I have too much to do. Despite my prostate cancer I am determined to live beyond 100, so at least another 20:years. As an atheist I don’t believe in either a heaven or a hell. So no further roles for me. The only chance to do some good is here.

The Tory governments of the last 14 years have been to the left of the last Blair Labour government, their tax and spend approach is classic Labour. The average Tory Party member would like a return to proper conservative values and policies. There is no hard right in the conservative party outside of your fevered imagination. Most people would like to see Brexit implemented properly and enthusiastically, as would The Spectator. ‘Go Forward’ is also meaningless, just a silly slogan like ‘progressive’. Hitler used the same sort of language in 1930s Germany.

Only those themselves on the hard right don’t recognise the ERG as hard right. Just look at its known membership. If you truly believe that most people are enthusiastic about Brexit in any way at all then you must believe in fairy tales. Here are a selection of polling which tells the reverse. You will, of course, ignore them, as you won’t be able to face the truth:-
