UK politics has never been pretty or scandal-free. However, I think what Boris Johnson did during his tenure as PM (and even before that, as Mayor for London) took the UK to a new low of what is acceptable. Now, without his leadership and Charisma, the Government seem (and indeed are) totally clueless. Their inadequacies are exposed for all to see, and the population are suffering. And things are going to get worse. The new laws introduced this year are part of a clampdown on potential protests. The Tories are quietly bracing themselves and seeking to minimalise civil unrest. Impose a start and finish time It will also become a crime to fail to follow restrictions the protesters "ought" to have known about, even if they have not received a direct order from an officer." I am not so sure about this. Whilst protesting and having your voice heard is a precious right, others also have rights not to be impacted by you. As some of the tactics now being employed go well beyond having your voice heard, but are designed to disrupt the lives of others, it seems appropriate to draw some lines. I have never, for instance, been supportive of the direct action employed by the likes of Green Peace. I support their objectives but not the way they try to achieve them. Expecting our over stretched police forces to be spending time dealing with such people seems a total nonsense when they cannot respond effectively to real crimes.

Boris was ousted more because of Brexit than what he presided over.

It's a peculiar set of circumstances we have at the moment. Everything has gone to 5hlt. And yet we have politicians who don't appear to want to Govern. Things look a "bit too tricky", as politicians in Governance, may actually have to do some work. The Tories or Labour seem devoid of any appetite to be in government.

If they called a snap election now - which I would do if I were in charge - then Labour would also be in deep poop as they wouldn't have a clue either.

Found it. A really interesting article. I'm sure other aspects of financial (mis)management are also impacting the economy, but the numbers in the Pension funds are truly mooohsive. (or rather,...WERE)

There is a huge difference between being economical with the truth (not necessarily telling everyone, everything) and telling outright lies. Who runs for the Democrats in 2024 is of critical importance. I expect, and hope, that they will choose a completely clean slate. I like Harris, but she has been damaged by the constant character assassination. Biden won't run, of that I am sure. I hope they find a youthful, charismatic and probably female personality that people can believe in. Biden isn't some sort of master statesman. He's a doddering old fool who can't find his own way in stage to misread his cue cards.

The suggestion challenged was that there was a majority of the people in favour. All I was questioning was the wider truth of that, not whether in the method used there was. As no referendum is part of our democratic system it cannot be claimed that a majority of us decided. When our MPs endorsed the decision (which for me was bottling their actual responsibility to vote with their consciences) was when it became democratic. How do you know how either Greece or Italy would be performing if they were outside the EU? Is your contention that they'd be doing better outside the EU? If so then why shouldn't we?

It runs along the lines of "things can't possibly go wrong can they"? Edited by The Dolphin (18 Oct 2022 12.39pm)
