incompetence? bias? corruption? or all 3? And don’t tell me this ref , and of course not just this ref don’t know that for the flimsiest of reasons they have just changed the whole course of the game. Most pundits not fully biased including ex refs know Ayew got used and say so.

As I have asserted, NOT every foul merits a card. Agreed, but the assessment should be based on the nature of the foul and not the club affiliation of the offender. Ayew's was no worse than some of Liverpool's tactical fouls when we were setting up a counter-attack, however successful they would have been.

As I have asserted, NOT every foul merits a card. What you assert is clear. But are you saying that you would ref a game with both sides competitive , and allow one side 50 fouls with fifty stoppages, and never conclude that they are taking the piss out of you and everyone there? Whilst in your wisdom you have handed let’s say six cards to the other team, who have committed 25 fouls ? Edited by Putitout (11 Dec 2023 7.55pm) Edited by Putitout (11 Dec 2023 8.18pm)

The thing is all teams do it ,the best sides do it best of all . Lose possession , press ,get ball or foul, or attempt foul,

The main problem is that whenever you play the big boys the whole Back 4 are cautioned within an hour. This limits them in defending as they have to think twice whenever they tackle and is a widely underrated disadvantage. You may say that the numerous yellows are the result of ongoing waves of attacks by the superior side where the underdogs couldn't help themselves but by constant fouling. But this was clearly not the case in Sunday's game.

If you watch it again, I’m not sure what the free kick was for however Van Dijk jumped up in the air, caught it with two hands, put it on the floor and kicked it at Ayew within a few seconds. Was it taken from the right place? Certainly no spray from the ref. Not even sure Ayew knew 100% what was happening and then jumped in the air to avoid the ball when Van Dijk kicked it at him but still got booked. This also happened on the half way line, hardly a goal scoring position. The whole thing smacked of Van Dijk trying to get him booked which is disgusting. Imagine if every free kick was aimed at someone not standing 10 yards away? What is the referee going to do then? I agree 100% with this. Almost an argument for booking Can Dyke for bad sportsmanship. But hey we all know that will never happen

With respect, it is not irrelevant as I have consistently stated a fact that referees err from high to time, having to make split-second decisions in fast moving situations. Apropos, "Adds nothing to the debate", I have been consistent in my messaging and whether my comments have added value to the discussion is for others to conclude. Edited by Willo (10 Dec 2023 3.03pm) On the subject of refereeing you don't have "sentiments". It's the same "sentiment" all the time, trotted out month after month, season after season. It's a Pavlovian reaction: someone criticises a referee and you will immediately post that referees can err - but never admit that the criticism is justified. And that's why I say your repetition of the same, never-varying words doesn't add anything to the debate and has become simply tedious. If your words were a "load of old codswallop", they would be much more interesting.
