The Aussies gave it a real good go, but predictable results on the day. I have my fingers crossed that a couple of underdogs will sneak through. It'd be good to get an Asian team advancing. Certainly possible considering the results so far.

Quick thought: Kyle Walker My memory is awful these days, has he played yet and didn’t he have an injury just before this WC? Apologies if not but nonetheless, if we are destined for a quarter final showdown with the French, and I don’t feel apprehensive in suggesting that a) that will happen b) They are the best team in the world right now and c) their main threat is possibly thee worlds best player right now, Mbappe, wouldn’t walker be the one player we’d want to mark him? If so is it worth him getting up to speed against Senegal first? I’m increasingly aware my initial statement could be wrong so please correct me if so! He started against Wales and came off after about 60 mins. Played well. Got to say, it's been a fantastic WC so far in terms of the footie. Second half of the Aussie games against Argentina was brilliant, the Aussies looked dead a buried. As bad as our performance against USA seemed at the time, I think with hindsight, it wasn't a terrible result. They were hard working and organised. With all the shock results so far it puts it into context a little and we've actually performed better than all teams in the group stages. Our riches we upfront are absolutely terrifying - I'm just worried Southgate will balls it up again and go negative when we come up against a really strong opponent (France in the quarters). Senegal will be a tough match tonight. They'll be athletic, physically strong and quick. They're African champions and will be well up for it. I'd expect us to narrowly scrape through. Going for a tight 1-0 win. Who do we start upfront? Kane hasn't been firing but he's still our main man. I'd go Saka - Kane - Foden.

I see Vincent Kompany is being touted to replace Roberto Martinez as the next Belgium manager - bit of a step up from manager of Burnley.

i fear the same. If they are on the field of play at the end of extra time, I expect Kane to take the first penalty and perhaps Maguire the second.

Edited by Willo (04 Dec 2022 9.46am) You said that. We also have players who play in England and one in Germany. I would also not be surprised if Senegal win, AFCON champs and all. However I think our squad is better and our prep/resources greater and this should pull us through. But don't expect an easy run; and do expect a difficult first half.
