Exactly what quotas are these you refer to? Please be specific in your answer. Genuinely want to know. Not evading your point T, but it is up to the country to negotiate it with the EU. Basically under the freedom of movement directive you can remove undesirables for a period, if you take it up, but for some reason the UK did not want to. The idea was, that as there was concern over immigration, the EU would be flexible and allow member states what they wanted, within reason, without disturbing the principle of free movement.

We could have opted out for up to 7 years which many of the others states did so when 10 new mainly Eastern European countries joined as we didn't the UK was the obvious destination. Anyway the quotas all ended between 2011 and 2014.

There's so much misinformation about the EU and exactly what EU laws and regulations are and how they operate. We also could have operated a more stringent immigration and benefit regime under EU rules, we just chose not to. With freedom of movement can you please explain how we could have implemented a more stringent Immigration Control. Before you answer be aware I worked for Immigration/BF for over 30 years.

Correct, the UK could have had its own quotas as a few other member states do. I don't know why PM May did not take it up as it is right up her hawkish street. Too occupied with Windrush I expect.
Absolute bs sorry. Wind rush was a mess but if Senior CS had allowed those “on the ground” with experience to take control it would not have happened. Having said that, as with everything, there was an element of abuse used by some. Edited by Spiderman (28 Jan 2021 5.32pm)

Sorry I beg to differ. The only flexibility that the UK government did not implement on immigration was that after 3 months if a EU citizen had not found a job they could be deported. Oh and Blair chose not to to use quotas at the start. I think others on here can can probably explain better the problems and costs of deporting anyone so I guess the government decided it wasn't worth the effort. It is better to stop people coming in the first place than to remove them afterwards. The only flexibility we had was within the EU rules now we can make up our own rules. Edited by Badger11 (28 Jan 2021 12.55pm) With regard to the 3 month rule, EU nationals can travel in on ID cards and have no stamps placed in their passports, this was EU law! So how does anyone know when they entered? Absolutely no chance.

BF could only remove EU nationals on3 grounds, Public Health Public Policy and Public Security. I used to train on this subject so am aware of this, this was EU law. Unfortunately I cannot go into to much detail but those that think we had the option to put quotas into operation are totally wrong
