As I was. My wife is an erstwhile secondary school teacher and she never liked Gove when he was in charge of education, a view shared by many, many teachers because I suspect of the demands he placed on them, but she told me last night that if he makes the final two she will vote for him in preference to Johnson. She sees Gove as very erudite, good on detail, top of his brief and a strong leader who won't be bullied by the EU or take any nonsense from anyone. Education is completely fecked nationally....Something that would take a long term focus to fix (and changes to human rights law) and no one education secretary is going to achieve anything. I liked the direction Gove was going in education with the qualifications but not really with his attitude towards teachers....while teaching unions are definitely a big obstacle to progress.....it's also true that the teaching profession has huge bureaucratic and work/life constraints that damage much of its potential. Like all of them he just gave lip service to that. It's been a political and activist football for decades and has suffered as a result.....For a start they could stop using contrived statistics to lie about just about everything....but don't get me started. In short, while I'd agree that most Tories know that Gove is far more a details man with more competence than Johnson......he sure isn't an election winner. I think that's why most MPs are siding with him....they are thinking of their jobs, not their favourites. As we know elections aren't won by the Tory membership but by the voting population at large....and Gove is a turn off compared to Johnson. Johnson is likeable to the everyday person in the street......and that charisma is rare and special.

The other 4 are simply beating the May drum - we must have a deal, Britain is a great power blah blah. You cannot expect to magically solve the backstop issue and renegotiate the WA so that is suddenly passes through parliament. Half of the f***ers were involved in some way of trying to assist that effort already. Agree that the people’s assembly is a bit bats*** but it worked in Ireland on abortion and ffs it’s at least something different than may tactics 2.0.

If the EU refuse to negotiate I don't see the point in having a people's assembly. If the EU will agree to negotiate then the government doesn't need a people's assembly it needs a team of negotiators who can agree a deal that will pass through parliament. MP's already know how the people feel on this issue I don't see an assembly adding anything new unless the real reason is to stop Brexit.

If I a Tory member I'd vote for the chair from the first round. Quiet, sturdy, never taken drugs, isn't a liar and isn't a racist. What's not to like?

MP's already know how the people feel on this issue I don't see an assembly adding anything new unless the real reason is to stop Brexit. No they dont and thats half the issue. Some people voted thinking we would have deals the next day (David Davis), some voted for no deal (As Farage claims), some voted to stay in the single market (Owen Paterson). MPs know how a massively misinformed public voted on this issue 3 years ago, with a flawed binary vote which cannot be delivered due to the issues I detailed in my first paragraph. The dynamic and entire approach needs to be changed. If a mandate comes out of an entirely different mechanism than parliament, then is seamlessly ratified BY parliament (because everyone agrees to that beforehand) the EU may look more seriously on concessions to get something done. Simply saying we will renegotiate and fix the backstop with unicorns is what the EU people have been hearing for 2 years. We have already gone down the wire on 2 deadlines, so that wont work this time either to force something through. Speaking as someone who has been involved in negotiations for large global outsourcing deals, and then running them to completion I like to think I have a fairly good nose for bulls***. Everyone except Stewart is largely spouting bollocks in these debates. Rory Stewart is a details/get into the weeds kind of guy, he is analytical and very sharp. He is not perfect but he is talking sense when he uses his bin analogy below. Boris Jonhson and the rest are basically the exact opposite. They talk in high level jingoistic rhetoric. High level rhetoric NEVER leads to implementable plans. [Tweet Link]

Stewart's bin comment was in direct reply to this type of BS coming from Gove in particular. "Believe in Britain, we can do the impossible!" vs "Believe in the bin, I can get 3 large rubbish bags in there, trust me!" I just knew you would love some high level jingoistic rhetoric, Stirlingsays, cos you love Trump and he is full of it.
