Obviously not a good performance, but it is a blessing in disguise. Some players aren't up to it, Puncheons days are numbered along with Ward. Agree that neither had great games but I don't think its as simple as replacing a couple of players. The formation is the problem, unless we had Man City / Chelsea type money for a massive upgrade in most positions, I think were on a hiding to nothing contuining down this path. We aren't playing to our best players strengths. Edited by cpfc1976 (12 Aug 2017 5.17pm)

We need to get back to doing well what we were doing well. Changing the system to play the kind of football the manager "likes" is no more going to work for de Boer than it did for de Tw@t. Look at the team that beat Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal last season and play like that with the additions of Fosu-Mensah and Loftus-Cheek. Would be outstanding. Not this s***.

we see that so why don't they FdB has never managed in the PL, yes, he was a success in the Dutch league but that is not the same quality and as soon as he moved from that league he was a bit suspect, all SP wanted was a budget manager (salary demand low!, compared to more experienced manager), Watford have been transformed by Silva based on today's game, using his experience from last season and the backing of the board in terms of spend in this window (circa 52 mil). Silva went to Watford because he knew SP was a ditherer and will not accept that to be a success in this league these days you have to spend, no good having an increased capacity ground if you are going to end up in the Championship!

Have been trying to find de Boer's excuse for that shambles. Anyone hear any interview? If he comes out with the sort of s*** Pardew used to spout I'm going to lose the plot.

Not quite the start i had hoped for or expected. Mr. De Boer must have learnt a lot from today. Onwards and upwards! How did he possibly need, as a PL manager, today to learn that lesson?! I'm not a professional manager but it was obvious from the outset that us playing 3-4-3 was going to be a s***show

Most interesting thing FdB said was that he knew exactly how Huddersfield would play because he analysed them and it came as no surprised so why werent we prepared for it?

In the second half FdB moved Loftus-Cheek into a deeper lying role and that brought about an improvement to our game and Huddersfield no longer controlled the centre of the park. It's not a big thing, but I didn't see any armchair managers pointing that out at half time. What people seem to forget is that everyone was complaining Big Sam was not the answer due to his abysmal start and there were some calling for his head after a few games. After about eight or nine games his ideas finally started to feed through to the players and we got results. Let's at least give the players the chance to try and adapt, after all, we have three players who grew up playing this system in the three dutch lads. Mark Hughes had a bad start when trying to change the way Stoke played but it paid off in the end and they are seeing better football than what was seen under Pulis. For me I'm excited by the young loanees and I think Wilf will have better days. The Liverpool game is going to be a massive test given their high press and I think they will win fairly comfortably, it is then a matter of mental strength and move forward. As a final note, despite supporting FdB for now,I hope we move to a 3-5-2 system with Wilf in a floating role behind Bentenke. That way we can sit Luka and RLC in front of the back three with both being comfortable in taking the ball deep and moving it forward.

Not good, obviously. Fosu-Mensah shouldn't be playing CB. Townsend should have started. Can't play out from the back when we're getting pressed and the players need to be smart enough to realise that. Fans getting on Jairo's back is counter productive. More creativity needed in midfield. Could be a long season. Has anyone ever lost the first game 3-0 and won the league ?

Pardon for being half-empty but we may have given a relegation rival three points.

Closest I can find after a quick look is the opening day of the 1993/4 Premier League season when Ipswich won 3-0 away to Oldham. Ipswich finished the season just one point and one place above the relegation places: Oldham however did go down!
