A gamble IMHO. Could go either way, obviously I'm hoping for the best. We need a proven striker that it is ready to go straight into the side and add to our qualities up front and give different options. Bamford will provide that but Wickham I'm not sure on. Seems at this stage he is just another option to flit in and out of the side. Hoping this works out. Edited by Brisbane Eagle (01 Aug 2015 1.57am) All player purchases at this point of our journey in the Prem are a gamble, but I think this is a very measured one. If he has a very average year, given his previous experience, age and attributes and for the amount we're paying, there will always be another team willing to pay at least close to what we are shelling out. Much less risk than m spending on a South American who's never lived in England. I'm hoping he'll bully defences like CamJam did, but with more of a goal threat. I can see him fitting well with Chamakh sitting just behind him.

As per my previous posts I am totally underwhelmed by this signing and would rather have not bought at all than buy him.

He seems to have been around for ages! And he's only 22! He's still a nipper and worth a Chance I think. With the service he will get from midfield and wide areas who's to say he won't bag a hat full of goals? That's if the deal gets done!

Been played out of position in a s*** Sunderland team. At 6"3' He is the same height as Andy Carroll so could offer a direct style of football. Full of energy to bully defences of the ball like Cameron Jerome as mentioned by someone else. Deceptively fast to enable to play a counter attacking style of football and might even keep up to Wilf and Yannick to give them an option in the box like we would have got from Remy. And from what I have seen he scores goals mainly against the top 6 clubs which is always helpful. I can definitely see how he is a plan B to Remy as they both play the same way. At this point in time he is not up to the standard of Remy but who knows? In the long run I see this transfer as a successful one and could lead on to a 'Harry Kane' brake out season with an international call up waiting for him.

As per my previous posts I am totally underwhelmed by this signing and would rather have not bought at all than buy him. I believe you said all that on porpoise just to get a reaction! Souare and Mutch both apparently played very well in South Africa with Steve Parish claiming the latter was the player of the tournament. Both these guys will have improved now and be real assets in the coming season. Souare is a proper left footed left back which we desperately needed while Mutch adds strength in depth and will be pushing hard for a starting place. Sanogo was a loan player and Ameobi a stop gap who was only here a few months. CY Lee is an extremely talented player we picked up for one million pounds whose injury meant he will be like a new signing this year - another more than capable player to have in the squad. The only other real signing in January was getting Wilf on permanently from a loan deal. Cabaye we all know is a class act and McCarthy is a well respected young keeper with PL experience and will provide good cover for Jules. Bamford was the league one player of the season last year and has now graduated to a PL first team squad for a mid table team - he is still unlikely to be first choice but will also be wanting to force himself in to the starting eleven. Wickham is 22 years of age. That is young and he has about five years before he reaches the prime age for a striker. Played in the right position he will score goals but on top of that he will be a handful for any defence. Really what is not to like by Pardew's signings over the last eight months?

That is a really good summary. Totally agree. All we need is a shrewd CB signing (not Collocini) and we are good to go with a transformed and improved squad . My Santa wish list is that Philips comes in from QPR on a player exchange plus cash deal

No he wasn't, he was the Championship player of the year, that's a very big difference. Even Zaha didn't win that accolade in our promotion season, so he could prove to be a real asset once he settles in.

According to newspaper reports all our previous managers have looked at Wickham in previous windows. In fact there were runmours we had bid before when TP was here. They clearly think he fits the system and would fit into our club ethos. He is 22 moved to a "big" club at a very early age after excelling at Ipswich. It didn't work, neither did Wilf's Man U experience. Sunderland have been a team in crisis for a few years and this may explain his performance on the pitch. None of us know why it went wrong for him, Possibly he didn't settle in area, possibly the wrong managers - he was played out of position a lot, possibly attitude problems. He struck me as a player lacking in confidence. To me he seems to be a bit of a gamble but he has premiership experience, He has played at all junior levels for England and has been tipped in past for a senior call up. If he performs to potential he could be a really clever signing. The question really is who is going? Murray,Gayle or Campbell

He is not too costly and would do well in the Championship for an ambitious club. Listening QPR? Campbell plus Geudioura plas cash = Philips?!

As some people have said on this threaad i to believe that Wickhan is lacking in confidance and been played out of position. His performance at the Etihad couple of seasons ago was superb he could of had a hatrick and i'm sure in Sunderlands following away game Wickham scored at Stamford Bridge. This man can do it at this level, play him in the middle and he will get us goals. He must of played with Wilf for the u21 also.
