9m is not exactly a sound investment at 29. it's a gamble, but if he scores close to 10 goals it's smart. if he doesn't and we go down we'll probably sell him for less than half the 9m we spent! tough call. good luck Alan

£8 million on 29 year old? really.

Not really sure what that means....£8m on an 18 year old is more acceptable ?

yes he is a proved goal machine he scored 2 of his 4 goals against the mighty tranmere rovers who are 2nd to bottom of league 2 ,£70,000 a week on 3year contract for a player who will be 30 in summer , mark lawencson of the bcc fame also spoke highly of him as well saying he looks like the sort of player that will 1 goal in about 20 chances ,but what does he know

Indeed, what does he know ?

One of the laziest, throwaway sound bite pundits around..

As for Gomis - you seem to base all your assumptions on 2 minute MOTD snippets, on a player who has had to play second fiddle to one of the hottest strikers of the last two seasons so has had very little time to acclimatise to the rigours of English football with full 90's under his belts but since becoming first choice (i.e 2 games or so ago) has hit 4 goals

If we got the player that I saw in Ligue 1 then we have a very good player and fit for how we want to play indeed

Edited by The Sash (16 Jan 2015 10.31am)

i am sorry to disagree with you on this player but as like you i want the best for palace its not even the amount of money we would spend ,its the fact i have watched him play 4 times this season and do not think he is very good, and who do i think we
should sign i do not know ,but signing somebody for the sake of it does seem a tad bit silly to me

You have been to see Swansea and watched every minute of those 4 games ???

no i have not been to swansea to see him play. but i have watched him play on live stream 4 times this season when palace have not been playing i watched him play against west ham last week ,i do admit he was a bit better than before when i watched him play but previous he was really poor ,i have family in south wales who are swans supporters and my cousin who watches them all the time does not rate him either and the feeling is they want to sell him and make a quick profit on him ,they are very cute in the transfer market and for a small club they have been very clever in buying and selling ,,,

So that's a no then

Got to be honest here Sash.I agree with Blackgirl here.
For the kind of money that's being quoted it's a big risk,I would like us to try and get Stephen Fletcher,Or Rudy geestade(is that the spelling) from Blackburn.
Just my opinion.

Neither of those are in the same league as Gomis.

Having seen all three play, I'm convinced Gomis is by a long way the best player, for a number of factors.

I agree; Fletcher can score but only plays 12-15 games a season. Not his fault, obviously, but injuries have taken their toll. Gestede is also a decent player, but he's looked best physically dominating championship players. For £6m or more very much a gamble. Gomis can score and is physical, but also has pace and a lot of skill for a big guy.

And at age 29, compared to Defoe at age 32, he represents good value, could get money back if we went down (which we won't)!

If we want to establish ourselves in this league, these are the sorts of figures we have to start spending.

Great signing of we can get him.

I still think a fit Fletcher would score us enough goals to stay up. But the problem is whether he stays fit.

Gestede I just haven't seen enough of to judge.

But if we spent £9m and went down, there is absolutely no way we would ever get our money back for Gomis. He would go for £5m tops. And in all likelihood would have a relegation release fee clause built in to the contract. So it is a risk. And an expensive one at that.

But I still think it is a risk that could be worth taking.

A lot of debate as to if he is worth it or not, and in reality that all comes down to individual opinions.

Personally I think 8-10 million is about the right price for him. Yes you can get cheaper bargains but you never know if they will turn out to be a bargain or not, likewise you can pay more and get better (although that relies on you being able to attract better names).

I think the core of this comes down to 4 things.

1) The 8-10 mill price is within our reach. We have been frugal in the past and no shame in this but a 7-10 mill signing is a fair price range for a bottom half premiership club. Also acts as a statement as thats how we see ourselves.

2) He is the right type of striker we need. the attributes we need at this moment in time to fit our style of play. Could we have gone after Defoe...possibly but he isn't the same sort of striker, different attributes than Gomis

3) Availability. Slightly debatable this as Bony has now gone but it seems this player is available at around this price is available at this time.

4) Premier player. I'm struggling to think of another premier striker with his attributes and price. Yes we can save 2-3 million by maybe getting a championship equivalent but with that comes the risk `can they step up`. Are we in the position to take that risk? Have we not got Sanogo who is that `risk`? Think we need someone a bit more established and I know he has not played too much but there must be something about him working day in day out with premier players, he is well thought of by outsiders.

I would like to have Gomis as an option but I don't think he's nowhere near the £10m evaluation. I used to like his early Lyon performances but I watched him many times in the last few years and he's grown clumsy and became an increasingly unwanted part of a team in decline and transformation.

He's a £5m player at best; I'd rather move on with what we already have than break the club record with such a transfer.

Rudy Gestede is a good Championship player but that's it. He could not cut the mustard at Cardiff in the Premier, and nor could he in the French Ligue 1, 10 goals in 77 games in a League that is good but nowhere near as strong as the Premier, his goal scoring record at U19 International level 0 in 17 is not good.

Steven Fletcher whilst is better than Gestede's it's still not one that gives rise for excitement 1 goal in 3.11 games he's to inconsistent.

Where as Gomis has proved when at Lyon he can score in Ligue 1, he needs game time to fully adjust to the Premier, his last 2 goals and his play in the box offers the sort of threat we don't have, and neither Fletcher or Gestede offer that threat as both don't have the physical presents or speed in and around the box.

Last year I compared us moving from shopping in Lidl to now shopping in Sainsburys.

We have now moved from shopping in Sainsburys to shopping in M&S.

Most if us aren't used to that so paying what is in effect a lot of money for us (though not in PL terms), feels alien.

We need to buy better players than we have now without getting rid of the ethos that has served us so well over the past few seasons. A few favourites probably need to go or become squad players, it will take some adjusting to

That is assuming Gomis turned out to be a flop for us. If he scored 8-10 goals but we went down anyway, his star would rise and although we've gone down Gomis is now a proven prem striker in a failed team. Think what he could do in a good team, tills start ringing.

The only way we wouldn't get money for him would be if we go down, he doesn't score and gets injured. That's a risk you have to take imo, with whoever you buy.
