All this lockdown is about is reducing the strain on the NHS so it can function and still be capable of treating all those with COVID and any other disease. It is inevitable that financial pressures will ensure that restrictions will be lifted at the very first opportunity. If the NHS is managing the load then there is no reason not to. People will still contract and die from COVID either way for a long time to come and the only difference will be that hopefully, no one will die through lack of care, or at least, no more than usual. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (12 Apr 2020 11.53am) Sure, however we have seen that the NHS were able to respond in terms of capacity....though to the detriment to other patients. All the deaths we are getting now are from before the lockdown and it appears to be leveling off rather than spiraling.....that's now previous viruses in the past have acted as herd immunity spread. The building of extra hospitals and provision happened quickly and lockdown or no lockdown it would have.... and has sufficed on capacity.

This is where you let yourself down Dan. Don't do the antagonism. Just stick to presenting your arguments or at the very least, give it some blatant political rhetoric. Stirling is right about a lot of things. He likes to speak his mind and gets as much back as he gives out. If you think he is 'wrong' on something then show it with a good counter argument backed up with some substance. Otherwise, stop bleating. I would love to stop the antagonism but when presented with facts and substance that prove him wrong he doubles down on the b*llocks. It’s very Trumpian. Someone needs to keep calling him out.

Oh come on, the sheer hypocrisy of Abbott and the fact that her limited ability has been rewarded many times over what it deserved surely must be recognised. Patel has ability and is making her way. Plus....you have missed out the most cogent and relevant difference between the two of them. Patel is far more bangable than Abbott...This point of difference cannot be overlooked when judging their suitability for office. In fact if anyone out there still wants to bang Abbott, I seriously recommend that they seek help. I know the topic has moved on somewhat but, and again not cheerleading Abott here, but Patel does not have ability. The judging criteria is very much lower and some are given much easier time than others in my opinion. Sadly I think that they rely on her ‘je ne sais quoi’ to mask the incompetence, see also Sarah Palin. There is a reason Patel has been hidden from the spotlight in all of this thus far, I assume now she’s done her innings we won’t see her again for some time. Maybe I’m being harsh and she’s just been really busy with keeping a lid on all those ‘counter terrorism offences’. [Tweet Link]

I’ve been chastised for criticising the government on here and ‘making it political’ but this lockdown is very much The Right Thing To Do right now and I fully support it. I hate not being able to go out. Hate not being able to see my family, my mates, even going into the bloody office. But you know what? I can suck it up and take one for the team and the country.

Funnily enough I agree with you danh on the lockdown and however long it takes to get these cases and deaths down. I'm still having to work BTW as is my son and my mrs does a few hours at school once a week. Stirling has a different take and surely it isnt political or any other descriptor. This thread is going to overlap race, finance, areas and all sorts. It's one of those threads where even WE isnt politicising and hes got an A* in that and would admit it I reckon. Times are strange and emotions, even without having been directly affected by the bug physically are running high. I'm sure at the end there will be rivers of tears of relief to have swerved it if so. It is a strange thread where it should be a bit open season on ideas.

In terms of being serious about Patel, I don't really know enough about her to be honest. Abbott has been around for donkey's years.
