The pushback followed immediately as it was exactly the kind of stupidity I mean. Do things like this and the Tories are finished. The Tories are very unlikely to be in power in 2027 and should they pull off a miracle it won't be because they have adopted hard right politics again. Those days are over, hopefully for ever. It's just like the 30s in Germany! Edited by georgenorman (14 Mar 2023 1.19pm)

Free speech cannot be and has never been unlimited for anyone. You have made this very argument yourself. When it comes to illegal immigration. The idea that we can just continue as things are now is insanity. The majority of people support halting illegal immigration. The Tories are going hard on this firstly because it is essential, and second because it is a vote winner. This is when democracy actually works. Meanwhile, the BBC is funded by all of us and cannot be seen to be Left bias, as it surely is. If the BBC wants to be funded by law, then it has to get its house in order. And the government didn’t say anything about ALL immigrants. Just illegal ones, who are not refugees at all. Plus the child claims are often 20 something males. If Linekar had given it more nuance he might not have looked like the useful idiots he always does. I caught Theresa May earlier say something needs to be done, but unfortunately people trafficked might be the collateral damage. The flaws in this need addressing. I’d rather hear details that mean more than juvenile politics from a former footballer (goal poacher tbp). There’s too many idiots unwilling to look beyond ‘’I am right that this is wrong’’

You were doing so well with the highlighted comments. Until the last one! Free speech cannot be unlimited, and I have said so myself. Using hate speech publicly is rightly illegal. However it must be balanced, and finding the right balance is what is currently under review. We certainly cannot allow the current level, and methods, of illegal immigration to continue. It is senseless for everyone, except the criminal gangs. I support the government efforts. The BBC is funded by all of us by taxation and it's users via the licence. There is though no "left" bias in the BBC. It's position is, and always has been, strictly impartial. What people like you seem to get confused and wound up about is that journalists, as a group, tend to come from a background which has an interest in social justice. They have enquiring minds and a skill with words., so they probe and report. When a government has been in power for so long it's easy to assume that because they are on the "right" that means that those who observe and question them must be on the "left". The fact though is they will observe and question who-ever is in government. The last Labour government was given a hard time too by the BBC and many on the left complained bitterly about alleged bias. Corbyn too was ridiculed by the BBC at times. I suggest you wait another 5 years to see how the next Labour government are treated. You might revise your opinion, though somehow I doubt it.

Users of the Nextdoor app have recently eenasking each other where there’s an open car wash place. The downsides of less illegal immigration run by gangs already being experienced by the white collar/pyjama laptop ruling class.

I have no doubt that the intention of the BBC is to be unbiased. In fact, I would suggest that the commercial channels are far more biased. Unfortunately, there has been increasing evidence that there are those within the BBC who are anything but unbiased. They cannot be allowed to distort reality with clearly biased hyperbole or party political bias when the public are forced to fund their employers by law. What really bother me is the double standards around how the media and the Left (often the same thing) uphold the right to free speech. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (14 Mar 2023 2.17pm)

With the BBC board's make-up as it is, with a tory donor chairman under investigation, a prospective tory MP and right leaning members, it makes it easy for the conservative party to bully and cajole them, credit to Lineker & co for making principled and successful stand. A lax creeping authoritarian right wing system is spreading across the UK in my view. Is the BBC promoting fascism, a poll of 1024 members of the public 94% say yes.

I simply can't believe just how much this has exploded. It's another example of a media outlet jumping on something that could cause moral outrage, stirring it up and igniting it - which seems to be the only thing that sells papers nowadays. I wouldn't have known about it had it not been blown out of all proportion. He's a (minor) celebrity giving his views to people who choose to follow him. not for my ears thanks. The BBC had no choice but to suspend him pending talks after this outrage, they were in an impossible situation. criticised if they do, castigated if they don't. They have a right to think about how their employees, freelance or otherwise, will affect how the bbc as a corporation are viewed, it'd be suicide not to. If they present a show then they are representing the bbc.

I personally believe you find the 'promoting fascism' poll funny - even hilarious. What evidence is there for that? Pictures of Sunak riding a horse in a Templar uniform with a sten gun?

Can you tell us more about this remarkable poll? Like who ran it, and how the members of the public were chosen? 94% of 1024 is 962.56 - was one of the voters in two minds?
