The 25% is our own error in negotiations with Man Utd and no ones else's problem. We sold him for what was deemed a very good price at the time then bought him back for a fraction but with a proviso that if he came good they would get their return that way. It was a good deal for us at the time and you can't have it both ways Originally posted by HerneBayPalace
Zaha turns around and says 'Okay, well I'm going on strike for the rest of the season until we accept a bid from Arsenal' What do we do? We have an asset worth £80M, agreed, but no clubs are interested at that price and he sits out a season decreasing in value. An asset such as a footballer is only worth what someone is willing to pay for him and if there are no buyers at £80m then he isn't worth that sum

I hear you but you're missing the point by taking a small amount of text and dismissing about him being unsettled and losing value over a season. The 25% is our own error in negotiations with Man Utd and no ones else's problem. I get we want more to cover the 25% deduction, but it likely won't work that way in the end. Parish signed the paperwork knowing this day would come. Your Hazard comment isn't really relevant in regards to the elite level of the clubs doing the deal and him playing European & international football for nearly a decade at the highest level. I don't want him to go, he is our best ever player and the driving force behind our sides success over the last 5-6 seasons. We need him. What if Parish says to Zaha 'No, you're not off unless we get £80M' Zaha turns around and says 'Okay, well I'm going on strike for the rest of the season until we accept a bid from Arsenal' What do we do? We have an asset worth £80M, agreed, but no clubs are interested at that price and he sits out a season decreasing in value. IT'S A MYTHICAL FINANCIAL SCENARIO We don't know Zaha or what he's thinking of doing. Blimey ! Then let him. His career will go down the pan like Berahino. We must not sell Zaha to Arsenal. They have insulted us and attempted to unsettle our player. Did Arnoutovic leave Spam? No. We must be resolute.

IT'S A MYTHICAL FINANCIAL SCENARIO We don't know Zaha or what he's thinking of doing. Blimey ! Leicester held out with Mahrez until they got what they wanted the following season. We are in no rush. If Wilf went on strike and had a bad season no big club would want him next summer. He isn't daft, he would know this. I think he has enough respect for the club that if Arsenal don't at least come close to our valuation then they can f**k off. Pundits from outside Palace are saying 80-100m is actually reasonable for a player of Wilf's talents, so this isn't just rose-tinted specs (see Sky News articles, interview with Dean Saunders, etc). I wasn't happy with the AWB deal but we got the second highest fee for an English player, so it seemed fair, albeit I didn't want him to go. The club is more important than one player, but when the team is built around that player we need to make sure we get enough of a fee to change our gameplan and that the timing of the sale suits us. Your suggestion (after United's cut) would leave us in a very vulnerable position. I would think and hope that Wilf would recognise this, even if he might not be happy with it. I will agree with something you said from the AWB thread though: "Wilf is far more important. To lose both would be suicide." Edited by taylors lovechild (02 Jul 2019 3.59pm)

The 25% sell on just shows how bad we are at negotiating. Bad or mean. We got a low transfer fee in return for the clause. We should have paid a couple of million more with no sell on.

We should have paid a couple of million more with no sell on. Wow, hindsight 20/20 on that one! As I believe someone else has already mentioned in this topic, there were a fair few Palace fans that didn't want to touch Zaha after Cardiff, as he looked truly awful. I wasn't one of them, I don't believe the majority were but I think it was a huge long shot for Zaha to get back to his old ways and then improve to the level he just showed last season. That was the only way this 25% option would ever be an issue. After a failure at Man Utd, no matter how well he performed for us for the next couple of seasons, no one was really interested because he looked like he couldn't hack that level. It's only now he's finally got back up to looking like he should be a top 4 club and even that isn't all down to him. He had a HUGE slice of luck that Man Utd fell off a cliff-edge after Ferguson. Had they continued to dominate English football, I'd imagine Zaha would look like the failure and not them. So as I say, I think the majority of negotiators looking at odds with form, injury, confidence, perception etc would say saving £7 million but offering a potential 25% on a future fee is definitely the right call. It just backfired. Edited by leejaneagles (02 Jul 2019 4.19pm)

We should have paid a couple of million more with no sell on. Why? Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Wilfs game has come on amazingly during his recent spell and although we knew he was good we could never have predicted a 5x increase in his value. At the time the deal was struck Manure took a big loss, we got our favourite player back and Manure got a bit of protection against their loss. If Wilf was completely loyal and stayed out his remaining career at Palace we wouldn’t have to pay out a bean to Manure so maybe we had that in mind when we did the deal as well.

Edited by taylors lovechild (02 Jul 2019 3.59pm) Losing both is suicide, but I didn't think this situation would pop up with Wilf wanting out and the statement etc. Different ball game potentially. We still don't know exactly what Wilf wants and we probably never will know the ins and outs, but it's known he's an Arsenal fan and wants European football. Just saying if he forces a move, lets try and take the maximum we can from our biggest ever asset. If he doesn't force it, then he can stay and pick up a healthy wage each week and keep on doing his thing. To not recognise football for the business that it is these days, is short sighted IMO, that's all.

if he wants to leave so much, why hasn't he put in a transfer request? I read that if you agitate for a move or put on a transfer request you lose any loyality bonus he is due for the duration of his contract.
