And did quite well, with players Roy neither trusts or plays regularly.

I largely agree with you Neillo, particularly about the point of short term thinking.

It's a point I've made on numerous other threads but I don't actually blame Roy for much of what is going on, I regard him as a symptom, rather than the cause.

Reappointing him was effectively deferring squad investment and a long term strategy until next summer, under the assumption that he'd keep us up. Looking at the table following that Luton win, it's a decision which could come back to haunt us.

He has some mitigation for our poor form and the injuries have been bad but I would say that his apparent acceptance of our lack of investment this summer means he does share culpability. A new manager would have demanded a deeper squad.

You have completely correctly identified Brighton's superior planning and implementation as the reason that they have overtaken us and that is what the club is lacking at the moment.

In an ideal world I'd like to see us appoint a new manager for the second half of the season whose own ideology matches our own of promoting academy youngsters as well as buying young players and developing them.

Give them six months to implement a philosophy and identify areas of the squad that need strengthening (even though we all already know them). We should be planning which of our key players we are going to sell this summer to fund a squad overhaul and who we are going to buy with the money. Then have a proper go next season.

What I suspect will actually happen is that Roy will just do enough to get us through until the end of the season, at which point we'll sort of see which managers and players are available and hope it pans out.

Most of the young players touted by the fans in recent seasons have turned out to be crap including signings like Riedewald, Meyer etc. De Boer put Lumeka and Lokilo in and they were pony as well.

On the contrary, it is my impression that Roy sets up with the same defensive plan for every game, and given our league position of 15th, it would appear that his natural negative caution is in part caused by a majority of teams being above us.

I often feel as though we could sign Mbappe, Vini Jr, Haaland, Bellingham, KdB etc. in January and Roy would still set up the same way, with the same game plan.

My impression of Hodgson has often been that he looks to keep every game pretty tight with the hope that Wins, Losses and Draws will all come with an even enough spread to see us secure our 12-16th placed finish.

Riveting it is not however I think his continued employment and our desperation to reinstate him was borne from an inability to do anything better, whether that be through financial investment or strategic planning.

He will been gone soon though and although our PL status is in no way guaranteed this season I hold reservations nonetheless as to our ability to genuinely move on from him. Makes for grim reading that but I am just trying to reflect the reality and not be a deliberately miserable fecker!

We are precariously close though and perhaps the Chelsea game will give us some indication as to the direction of travel.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I have no allegiance to Roy but your reservations about moving on from him whilst we are in danger of relegation is my point. He is more likely to maintain our premiership status than any new incoming manager. It is just my view. To take things forward we not only need a new manager with a new approach but new players to achieve it.COYP

Why do we even talk about relegation at this time?? Some teams below aus would happily swap with us, I suppose.

I agree with you we have enough quality in our squad and our management to ensure we won’t be relegated. It won’t be pretty watchable football but we will survive. Mind you when we win all of a sudden the fans become more enamoured with our manager and players COYP

Ok so Meyer and Riedewald are your two examples and for £8m I actually don't think Riedewald has been that bad as a squad player. Has won POTM twice for us hasn't he?

You're conveniently ignoring Olise, Eze, Guehi, Doucoure all of whom have been unbelievable. Then there's Mitchell and Rak-Sakyi who came through the academy.

I don't agree that 'most' of the young players have been crap and I'm not quite sure which alternative you're proposing?

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

Ultimately Vieira was sacked after taking 5 points from 11 games. Roy has taken 7 points from 11 games and with easier fixtures. We're sleepwalking into a relegation battle and if this horrid style of football isn't even guaranteed to keep us safe then why are we still suffering it?

PV was sacked because we were dropping like a rock into a relegation battle, while we had Wilf, Olise, and Eze (who PV started benching every match.) On top of that, I think we went 3-4 matches without one shot on goal, and looked arguably worse than we did with Frank Deboer in charge, which is almost impossible.

Also, PV was a beaten, dispirited husk of a man by then, who wasn't even returning the phone calls of SP, who was calling to ask WTF was going on.

When Roy replaced PV, pretty much our entire squad had a massive party and immediately played better. Things are not so rosy this season, but comparing PV to Roy is over the top.

The most frustrating thing is we had them on the back foot on Thursday night. Why did he take off Ayew? Why didn’t he bring on Franca? Why is he playing Eze out of position? Remember last year when he replaced Vieira, he played Eze in the middle and he was an inspiration -now he plays RICHARDS in midfield, who I noted that none of the other players wanted to pass too, because he’s not a midfielder.

This is terrible football and I’m looking at the league and it feels like we’re in a relegation battle which is a disgrace.
