Since Vieira was appointed manager the club committed to deals for players in the region of £125 Mill. Yes, but after Roy departed we only had the bare bones of a squad. It follows that to harvest some of the benefit of the PL's riches the club has to spend good money on players. Maybe we didn’t spend enough to get in more quality players?

Maybe we didn’t spend enough to get in more quality players? This exactly. Look at how much Chelsea have spent in the last year, and they already had a large squad of expensive players. By the time Roy went, with so many contracts expired, it could justifiably be argued 10 new players were needed to give a full squad. At the level Palace are at and to get high enough quality of replacements in, each player would cost £20 to £30m. So ten of those would have cost in the region of £250m. Only half that was spent. As I said, it was perfectly understandable if the board decided there was no way they could afford or justify such a massive expenditure, but then should have cut their cloth to suit by appointing a more pragmatic manager with permission to play a less expansive version of football that everybody, fans included, would accept providing it got results. Many years ago I recall Arsenal boring their way to the league title by repeatedly gaining 1-0 wins.

Disagree, He would have been the perfect interim boss, i think he would have guaranteed survival, imho Derry worked wonders at Notts County, but for some reason they sacked him. Maybe not so perfect!

Just because they played here doesn't mean they'll be good managers, Vieira was a good player, useless manager, Keane good player, useless manager, shearer....etc etc

So where Roy Keane and Bryan Robson, Awful managers Fair point in some ways - although Keane wasn't universally bad by any means. However, I somehow doubt Keane allowed passengers in his squad. Loads of ours are clearly coasting, or unable to run by at all. I can't remember anything about Robson as manager - obviously had a big effect on me.

It was Roy Keane who got Sunderland promoted back to the PL the season after they were relegated from it. Edited by Willo (09 Mar 2023 3.04pm)

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course). |
