I thought this piece from Anfield Index gives a balanced view of both the red card and Andersen's role in it.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

It’s also important to point out that the headbutt wasn’t intentional but was the exact outcome that Anderson was looking for. Having shouted at and then shoved Nunez, Anderson anticipated his next move and stepped in as Darwin spun around to go chest to chest with him. As Darwin turned, his forehead caught Anderson on the chin and like a mighty Danish Horse Chestnut tree that had been felt with blows from a Uruguayan axe, the big central defender fell to the floor in what appeared to be slow motion. This is about the most ridiculous summary since the 'He just walked into him' comment. Nunez moves his head back and then forwards into Andersen's chin. An unbiased account would be: Nunez upset Andersen by putting his head into his face. Andersen responded by shoving him. Nunez headbutted him. Andersen went down dramatically. If you're being sarcastic I apologise! Edited by taylors lovechild (19 Aug 2022 9.59am)

Andersen went down as any other player would (and is often necessary to draw attention to a red card offence as the useless officials would inevitably miss it), having just been headbutted - would be more accurate for me.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

You're right with regard to the need to draw attention from the ref, but I do think Andersen is one for amateur dramatics, especially given his size, and the way he falls is quite funny. I agree he has every right to fall down though.

Klippity is still whinging about it in his presser . . . "Of course we spoke to Darwin and he was very disappointed with himself. The things that the centre-half [Joachim Andersen] did, he's not the only player in the world doing these kinds of things.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Anderson isn't really known as a hard man, a wind up or the type of player that tries to get anyone sent off. Has he ever done it before? Can you even think of a time where an oppo has squared up to him? Wilf maybe, but if anything our 2 CB are pretty placid. The clips from the game look like any other defender/forward in any other game. A few little pushes to stop Darwin pinning him. He's not pinching him, or stepping on his toes or doing anything antagonistic. Just defending in a contact sport. How on earth is JA expecting a headbut after a finger wag and a little push. He was pissed off with Darwin trying to headbud him in the previous phase, so reacted and went to have a word. I highly doubt he was expecting another head but.

Just another example of the 'victim mentality' so beloved of the denizens of Anfield.

In the final analysis, Nunez disgracefully assaulted Andersen, yet the narrative appears to be focussing on our central defender with mention of "Sly fouls" and all that hogwash.Deflection away from the perpertrator of the violence. Indeed Andersen paid Nunez close attention but as has been mentioned there was no punching, violent pushes and shoves, stepping on toes etc etc.Andersen let Nunez know he was in close proximity and this is what one would want from a central defender against a renowned striker. Welcome to the Premier League Senor Nunez and enjoy watching from the sidelines. Edited by Willo (19 Aug 2022 12.35pm)

Agreed - they have to put it in a way that doesn't really blame their player.

Andersen's not hurt at all, just a storm in a teacup. Frankly, the last thing we need is Liverpool counting us as rivals. I find going under the radar a much better way to nick points

I find going under the radar a much better way to nick points I did because it was a waist-high, dangerous foul that could have done great damage. I believe I was the only one. After I'd made my comments, I was accused of wearing a sky blue shirt, almost. One-eyed fans are nothing new or specific to one particular club. But yes, JA was 'in his face', as indeed he should've been, letting him know he's there. If you can't live with that, you've no right right to be considered a top-class striker.
