A couple of points I'd like to pick up on.

Firstly - Benteke. We're finally, after 3 years, playing to his strengths. He's scored more headed goals since his debut in the premier league than anyone else. Not only do we need to cross the ball but also have people in and around him in the box to help free up space or have him one on one with a defender. Under Hodgson we were too passive, being reluctant to cross the ball and not having enough support in the box to allow Benteke to find space or isolate a defender.

I'd even go as far as to say Zaha is holding us back here. If you look at the chances Benteke had (the goal and the times he hit the woodwork) they all came from quick crosses. For the goal Olise didn't hesitate when he received the pass from Gallagher, he immediately shifted the ball onto his left foot and whipped in the cross. I doubt Zaha would have done this. He would have most likely driven the defender into the box and then tried to either cut back or make a shooting chance for himself. This is not playing to Benteke's strengths.

EDIT: I realise it was Mitchell that crossed for the goal. The Olise cross resulted in Benteke hitting the post. But I believe the point still stands. Both were crosses Benteke could attack.

Secondly - it's been said we have less points at this stage in the season than we did last year. Yes this is true. But it's also true we have had a harder start than we did last season. The average position of the teams played this season based on where those teams finished last year is 9th (counting Brentford as 20th as they came up via the playoffs). Last season the average position was 11th (counting Fulham as 20th as they came up via the playoffs and Leeds as 18th as they came up as champions). So far this season we've played 4 of last year's top 6 (3 of which were away from home). At this stage last season we'd played 2 of the top 6 (both away from home).

Finally - We all need to step back and take a deep breath. Yes the results haven't been what our general play has deserved. But did anyone seriously think Vieira would have been able to change our play style so quickly and completely in such a short period of time? I believed it would take time and the start to the season would be hard, given the fixtures we had and the changes to the team. We still need to sort out defending corners, but in open play we look solid at the back and exciting going forward. I believe the results will come. No need to panic, we just need to be patient.

What?! Players are man marking on corners, he's not there because of the corner. Personally I was annoyed at Ward yesterday because everything slowed down when he had the ball. He took too long on it, and passed backwards when he had open men upfield. But I don't blame him at all for the goal (which by the way was a worldie). Luka's stupid foul was the major cause.

Ward is trying his best and in fairness to him he has improved in his ability to play the style adopted by PV, however he is still way off what is required as an attacking right full back.

This is partly why we are all too often slow to play out from the back, because Andersen, our right sided centre back, knows that by giving it to Ward it will inevitable just come back to him or get passed sideways to Luka….time and time again. Ward gives us no outlet and we are so lacking purposeful attacking runs / movement, overlaps and crosses from our full back on the right hand side,

I believe that a decent upgrade to this single position will improve us going forward disproportionately and open up so many avenues for Andersen’s, Luka’s & Gallagher distribution and link up play with Olise, Eze and Edouard.

Other contributors have already made the point but having watched it again on MOTD, Ward was blatantly pushed during the build up for the corner which led to their goal. We aren’t talking subtle but an obvious foul. The referee had a particularly poor game and didn’t seem to have a great deal of confidence in a lot of his own decisions. The crowd got on his back and rightly so because he made a number of bizarre decisions and incorrect calls.

Indeed. The ref really shouldn’t be taking charge of premier league games. No consistency. You could point to loads of poor decisions or in consistencies. The ones that cost us most were the push on Ward (not given) as well as only booking one of the guys when 2 were fouled within seconds when we were breaking. The pull back was a simple yellow, but not given because the player was already booked and would of gone but the second foul did get a yellow. Simply not good enough.

And the player not given a 2nd yellow scored the equaliser

More gutted after that than any other game this season.

They were there for the taking, and whilst we went at our best we did enough to have won it.

Although he looked pretty dangerous, (I think) literally all our chances fell to Benteke. Not sure if its wasteful finishing of if he did well, most likely the latter.

I still don’t think Benteke works for us in this new system, just doesn’t move enough. But potentially another debate.

One thing that will be interesting to get thoughts on is Olise vs Ayew. Olise looked great in the 2nd half when we had our tails up, but didn’t do much in the first half. Potentially instructions given to him, but he didn’t move from the line and didn’t really get involved too much.

In recent games Ayew has been pretty involved in the press and holding the ball. Maybe he is more important that ppl give him credit for.

I was watching Olise for a fair bit of the first half. I don't think he was linking up with Ward very well at all. Either he was positioned right at the byline and marked out of any direct pass, or Ward was too desperate to get rid, couldn't make the pass and send it sideways or (as is his favourite direction) backwards.

The positioning wasn't really putting him in the position to make a run, and when he did, Ward had already sent it back over to the left wing. There was definitely a void for Gallagher to fill in there, so Ward could release it and CG then thread it through to Olise, but it didn't seem to happen very much.

I'd say some of it is Ward's reluctance to press forward - it's like he's terrified of the half-way line.... and those perpetual passes backwards (sideways if lucky) are a pretty good metaphor for why we only get 3 attempts on goal.

If we're getting Olise to run down the wing and cross it into CB / Edouard, then Ward needs to give him better service. It seemed he looked a lot better when he switched sides (towards the end of the 1st half I think)

I can't remember the last time we created so many chances for a Palace center forward and virtually no chances for anyone else. 6 big chances i remember
1) 1st 1/2 header hit the post
2) Goal from Mitchell cross
3) Volley from Gallagher cross
4) 1 v 1 with keeper missed
5) Header against bar
6) Disallowed goal
My feelings are the headed opportunities Benteke did well but was unlucky. The 1 v 1 he should have hit the target. The volley as well he shinned it rather than connected with his foot.
Generally though he has been playing well and remember the last game he had 1 chance and scored.

Benteke probably has had about 200 chances over the last 4+ seasons and scored 18 goals, yet we have a striker with a excellent goal record who we payed 18m for, and we are playing him out of position, hence same as the pervious 4 seasons missed chances, olise/schlupp -Edouard-Wilf means goals, especially when Eze-DM-Gallagher in midfield, and hopefully Furguson or a younger RB in Jan

There was also a weak shot in the box when unmarked and in space at The Whitehorse Lane end. He scuffed it along the floor straight at the keeper.

In the press conference Vieira specifically made reference to his happiness at Edouard's play from the left, Benteke's current form and their link up play.
He also said Zaha wasn't ready to start the game.
I wonder if we will see Zaha on the right of a front three fir certain games.

How many times do you need telling, Edouard can play anywhere across the front line, he isn’t a one trick pony. Benteke will continue to be the main striker in the majority of games.
