This goes back to my point made yesterday. Why is the confederate era an issue now and not when Obama when was in power? Or when Clinton was in power? Or when the Bushes were in power? In my view, this is about the left getting noisier because they know that right-wing politics has been stimulated by years of immigration with no visible advantage to the majority and increasing criminality among minorities.

"Trump instead employed a populist message with slights and anger aimed at various minority groups, because he saw that as a vote winner. It has emboldened some very unfortunate types." "Clinton would reel off a list of minority groups she feigned caring about in order to get the numbers she needed. She said very little to give hope to white working class voters though." Because we are being pushed to extremes of identity politics and so symbols of that identity become more important to people.

I think that social media and the failure of politicians to defend the mainstream & globalisation, has created an illusion of extremist politics entering the mainstream. 30 years ago, the likes of Trump and Corbyn would be considered to the right and left of mainstream. How are Trumps actual policies any different from Reagan's? How is Corbyn's different from Kinnock?

That's what I meant about people being pushed to extremes of identity politics. There's a very them vs us atmosphere that is hard to deny. The behaviour of the president is both a reflection and manifestation of that.

Quite. Far better to just leave them alone until people get bored with their rhetoric. Same with all hate preachers. No harm done as long as they stay just inside the bounds of the law. I recommend: to bring to a state of peace, quiet, ease, calm, or contentment; pacify; soothe: In case it wasn't clear this is irony and the quote is a definition of appeasement. You should never allow zealots a free run at persuading the hard of thinking. Assuming they stay within the law you have to push back like for like. Lessons from history innit.

Tim Pool posted a video that talks a lot of sense about the craziness of this current situation and how people are over reacting. He refers to a lot of what we have been talking about on this thread.

There is a blue plaque in Tennison Road to commemorate Arthur Conan Doyle who made many unflattering references to people of colour in his books. He even featured the Klu Klux Klan in 'The Five Orange Pips'. Surely in this day and age, in the 21st century, in our vibrant and diverse cosmopolitan near-utopia, we should tear down this offensive blue plaque. To further this progressive aim, I intend to form a collective, "Palace Resistance in Countering Klan Support" (PRICKS). Please PM me, preferably with a small donation, to help with this. Edited by hedgehog50 (19 Aug 2017 9.43am) I must say I am disappointed with the response to this - no one has joined! Just think, if the FC Schalke 04 fans had taken similar action in the 1930s against Hitler, World War II could have been averted. We may even have won the penalty shoot-out in the 1990 World Cup semi-final. So if you want to be a PRICK join the collective!
