Apparently, Biden is establishing some sort of 'Ministry of Truth' now. Just about the most authoritarian thing I can imagine unless I am wrong? Which I may well be!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Actions, and not just words, are the determinant. Without active moderation of content, you rely on users to stay within the rules. Gab is the wild west of social media. A town with a notice on the main street requiring everyone to abide by the law, but without a Sheriff to ensure they do so. Not true. That is something like 4Chan. Gab does moderate, it's just not as censorious as you'd like. However, that's fine....no one forces anyone to use a website. I essentially agree with Gab's level of moderation....keep the bar of censorship as low as possible to ensure liberty and freedom of thought. Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Apr 2022 5.29pm)

Gab doesn't moderate at all. That involves checking every post, usually via algorithms. What they do is investigate complaints about persistent offenders and will, very occasionally, warn them about their behaviour. Most times, no-body complains. If they do, it's rare for action to result. The outcome is a constant flow of unrestricted hate speech, misogyny, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. I read Gab with equal amounts of incredulity, disgust and amusement, at how people can be taken in by it.

Firstly you've set up your own definition of 'moderation'. You don't get to decide for a private company. You can have your own definition but other versions are available. If Gab moderates posts then that is moderation. Gab set its terms of moderation and its platform is policed within that context....for example, poorn on Gab isn't tolerated. As previously stated a site like 4Chan would fit your 'no moderation' description, not Gab....but you are too stuck in your ways to recognise that....try some of that change you pretend to love. Gab's vision of moderation may not fit your modern progressive ideas of censorship but that's for you.....no one makes you engage with Gab and you have plenty of other sites to choose from. As embarrassing as Trump could be sometimes he wasn't this. Unfortunately quite a few posters supported Biden. Now we have a world at risk of WW3, inflation scaring us in economies that have considerably worsened. And they can't say that this wasn't stated as likely before he took office.

Tucker Carlson openly attacked neoliberalism last night. I'm noticing a shift on the US mainstream right and elsewhere. Even Jeff Bezos....hardly right wing.....has been reading Curtis Yarvin, who's well known as being on the left of the dissident right. Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Apr 2022 7.39am)

Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Apr 2022 10.51pm) That Torba, and you, might wish to redefine what moderation means within a social media context, doesn't make it true. That's not just my opinion. Increasingly it's a legal opinion. If they decide not to apply generally accepted standards of behaviour, then the law will have to speak. I have no doubt at all that will be presented as censorship, Torba already claims it is on other sites as his justification for not doing so on Gab, but that is also untrue. Every democratic society has the right to decide what is safe and wise, and then set limits. We don't live in an anarchy, or in the wild-west where anything goes, or might is right. If Torba, or anyone else, continues to live and operate among the rest of us, then he must abide by the rules we set. Torba is already in a fight with Germany over this, and has been sent demands for action and threats of fines, which he is refusing to acknowledge. As an internet based company, how to police activity internationally presents new challenges, but these are actively under review. I have little doubt that action in the USA will be required and, ultimately, will arrive. It may take some time, and may take a demonstrably dangerous incident, to convince enough there of its necessity, but the destination seems clear to me. No company can just ignore generally accepted standards. They must be brought into line. In the meantime the Russian botnets are doubtless having many parties on Gab, feeding in their poison disguised as tasty pieces of evidence of Government corruption and failure, to be swallowed and regurgitated by those seeking confirmation of their biases. I no longer try to engage with anyone on Gab. It's pointless. The level of prejudice to be found there is at another level. I only dip in from time to time, so I stay informed of that prejudice. I also read Torba's missives, and his attempts to turn Gab into a money machine in the same way Jones has with InfoWars. These guys are smart. They exploit dissatisfaction, don't care that it is then stoked by the Russians feeding in disinformation, plead poverty and sell the gullible modern snake oil. Torba wants you to believe he is setting up a whole new "Christian" economy! By the time the rug is pulled from Gab he will have made more than enough to disappear onto his own island, where he can worship himself to his heart's content.
