To further my point, albeit speculation -
RT @tweetingnav: Rumours now that #cpfc pulled the plug on Howe before he agreed to stay at #afcb after he asked for more time

if true good for CPFC2010, it sounds quite possible both his suitors pulled out first so really he had no choice but to stay anyway.

Yes, good for them. They gave Howe as long as they could to make a decision, but you have to move on at some point, especially in a transfer window.

Watching our new board learn on the job how football works is proving to be a painful experience. While we should back them, they do need to start learning rather more quickly than they appear to be doing at present. Furthermore, in any industry (not just football), it is basic prudence and sound management that you don't make a change (thereby creating a problem) until you have the solution at hand (look at Ipswich: Jewell had clearly been lined up at the time Keane departed.)

The present situation is a mess; nearly halfway through the transfer window, no manager, little direction, and a team in the drop zone. It is, though, a mess entirely of our own making. The board needs to improve its performance almost as much as the team do theirs.

Why do you assume Ipswich have done the right thing? Just because they got a manager it doesnt mean they got the right manager. In my mind it makes more sense to spend a bit longer opening a few doors to see whats inside than putting everything into the first.

We did actually win our last league game, I dont see how everything is as dire as you make out.

Unbelievable. You really have totally missed the point. The issue isn't whether Ipswich got the right manager or the wrong manager. Only time will tell, and anyway, that's got nothing to do with it. The point is that the Ipswich board had a clear plan, they acted on it, and as a result the disruption caused by Keane's departure was minimised. While the yawning chasm at the top of the Palace tree remains open, hamstringing us in the transfer market in the process, Ipswich had their man in place within 48 hours and are now merrily heading forward down their chosen path. I know which example looks the more competent to me.

Lastly, waiting two weeks no more guarantees you'll hire the right manager than waiting 2 minutes.

How do you know that somebody else isn't on standby?I agree with your sentiment but it shouldn't really be posted unless you are fairly sure that's the case.

Hi Rory,
Because of this.

Well that was put in place a few days ago so maybe that is what they are happy to lead with and see fit as the best option?

I'm sure the money they offered Howe would be enough to coax most of the managers linked.seems none of them were quite right although I'd have though Hughton or Wilkins would work very well with Dougie.Maybe they aren't interested in coming to us,who knows.

Remember we have Kember now as well,so it's not necessarily last option should it be them who take the reigns.

I just find it a little astonishing that people already, without anything concrete, come on here telling CPFC2010 how to do their jobs.

I'm sure they'll be the first to hold their hands up if they feel they wasted their time pursuing Howe and the first to say IF they haven't anyone else lined up and whether that was intentional or not.

The way I see it, is that Syd was saying 2010 are learning how to run a football club.
They hired and fired Burley within 6 months.
They then went for Howe who was available six months ago.
Do not know who they are after now.
And If I was Dougie I would be pissed off.
As for Kember he had a crack at it and failed with a far superior squad to what we have now.

Firstly, whilst I believe that CPFC2010 are of course on a learning curve with this role - something that no manner of business experience can prepare you for - we have to acknowledge that they are doing their best and are likely to be very good chairmen, in time, given the wealth of experience they each bring to the table with all matters financial.

Love him or hate him Ron Noades made this point way back in July - he told us that the board could do with a 'football man' at the club to help them make their decisions - and hiring a manager and formualting a contingency plan would very much fall under the jurisdiction of said 'football man'.

I feel in this scenario CPFC2010 have done their utmost to ensure that they are dignified and not '2-faced' like most other moneymen in football. They would not want to be seen lining up another manager with terms sealed and signed without seriously undermining the current regime. Right or wrong I understand it as the football market is so open to the media and fans alike, that every decision made is scrutinised from every angle. If their way of doing things fits well moralistically and keeps the club on a sound financial footing - albeit meaning that the football side of things has a balls up every now and then I'll take it.

I'd rather be proud of my club struggling at the foot of the championship than have some real wide-boys telling us 'what we want to hear' swanning it up to the Prem whilst hiring managers behind the back of the one being fired. That will be the day that this really doesn't feel like my club any more. Much how I felt throughout the SJ era.

I take Syd's points on board and I can see how it looks ill-preapred and, dare I say it, amatuer - but I feel there is good reason behind it and the decision seems to be moral-based from where I am sitting.

Surprised there has still been no official announcement by CPFC2010. Looks bad when nothing is said, gives the impression that they've been caught unaware and there is no plan B or C. If this is the case, I can only once again suggest we should give the Doog the job as soon as possible and give him the greatest possible scope of using the transfer window successfully.

"Without anything concrete"? You are joking, aren't you? Both Alan and I are reacting to the immensely and viscerally concrete fact that we don't have a manager, and we haven't bloody had one for over a week. How much more concrete do you want?

I agree with giving the job to Dougie now, but as for no announcement, I dont think we should worry about that. Yes we would all like to know what's going on, but as people keep pointing out, time is running out in the transfer window and CPFC2010 want to make sure they have the right man. So I would rather them get on with their job and make an announcement when they are ready, rather than waste their time making sure we all know the ins and outs.

CPFC 2010 said that they hoped to conduct more interviews and appoint someone this week. So nothing has changed, they may have someone lined up. Do we know that Howe was first choice, he could've been in the running with another manager or two.

Eddie Howe was never going to leave Bournemouth now, in the summer maybe different. He has done a remarkable job there in the last 18 months and to leave now would be leaving his job unfinished. If he gets them promoted he would then have taken from certain relegation last year to championhsip in two seasons. If he doesn't get them up then I imagine he will leave if approached in the summer. Anyway that reallt does not concern us.....

When we sacked Burley(which I didn't agree with) I had a nasty feeling this could come back to bite us in the arse. Unfortunately this seems to be coming true. If I were CPFC2010 then I would give the job to Dougie until the end of the season and hope, no pray that he keeps us up. I would be happier with a Palace man in charge than lumping with some useless t*** like Sousa. I just hope CPFC2010 havn't made a rash decision when they sacked Burley. Before anyone says anything yes results wern't good but its not like we were adrift at the bottom.

I agree with a lot or your points, Syd. Mr Parish has made a lot noise about running the club as a business and, when I questioned the timing of the Burley dismissal, he justified his decision with management speak about targets not being met etc.

I think you are spot on when you say that the new board are learning to run a football club - the first think that they need to learn is that there is a vast difference between running the financial aspects of the club like a business and running the footballing aspects in the same way.

We need stability in the long term and reinforcement in the short term. It was a senseless decision to sack the manager at the start of the transfer window with nothing immediate lined up - this much is clear.

I do think, however, that we should avoid focusing on these mistakes in a negative manner. Having got into this mess, we need to be sure that we make the right appointment, accept that they will have limited time to strengthen the squad and back them long term. And I mean long term - not six months.

I'm not being funny but when there was half of us against Burley and the other half for Burley there was one thing we ALL agreed on - we need a striker capable of 10-15 a season, a gritty holding midfield player and a reliable centre-back.

Those were bare-minimum requirements that a new manager would expect and would then want to add his own personal touches to.

So if that's the case why are we fannying around letting all the good transfers go when I'm sure you could find those 3 requirements not only easily but without searching. There must be a lot of those types of players that are listed for loan in the Premiership and possibly on-sale in the Championship. With the exception of a 10-15 a season striker but at least a fast, pacey striker with a decent record.

Get Kember, Doogie and the board to actively look to sign those players, get as far forward as possible in the negotiations and then if all falls through with managers we have the players we need.

If we sign a centre back, midfielder and striker and then a manager comes in he can send a couple of Burley's loanee's back if he requires and buy other positions if he personally has his own targets.

We could get Jose Mourinho on the 31st of January at midnight and still be screwed if no one is signed.

And you can't exactly say we shouldn't be stepping on the new managers toes considering we still signed Iverson despite Burley's departure a day later.
