Fair play to Howe. Nice to see a bit of loyalty in football. Shame it took so long to get to his decision. Not entirely surprising, apart from two games at Portsmouth he has spent the last 17 years at Bournemouth as player and manager. Turning both us and Charlton down he appears afraid of moving out of his comfort zone. He either lacks nerve or ambition or both. Let's move on Or he has the ambition to complete the job that he's started at Bournemouth - after all, getting them promoted will look a hell of a lot more impressive on his CV than going down with Palace (or even managing to stay up). Don't be entirely surprised if he does move on somewhere in the summer though
That's just the ramblings of a madman |

It's good to see some people have loyality including managers and I wish Bournemouth and Eddie Howe all the best for the future.

I can understand why people are angry. I think people applaud the loyalty he has shown but are angry at how its been done. I understand that people need time to think. Howe had 4 days to think and then was still 'umming' and 'ahhing' If he is as devoted to Bournemouth as he says then why condider the proposals in the first place? We then discover that he played squash or something with the chairman this morning. Well why not just tell him and the press then as I'm pretty sure he would of known that he was staying. Instead we get all this 'training is cancelled' 'the players are being called to Dean Court' 'Announcement at 10' 'Announcement delayed til 12' It's nonsense. The chairman would of known last night what EH was going to do but just wanted to revel in the press interest and try and raise the profile of the club. Despite my earlier comment I do wish Bournemouth all the best but I think Eddie Howe needs to be careful. The story about the little boy who cried wolf springs to mind.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

With all that said though, good luck to you all, mainly to the respectful fans that seemed to have understood our position. We've had to sit and watch our best prospects leave without a seconds thought, so it's good to see this golden era may be extended. I think most people have a slightly inflated view of the team they support and it is pretty normal for fans to view anyone not joining their team as lacking ambition! What you say is fair and in all honesty, you'll find even those who are being a touch disrespectful would likely admit that they are happy for you guys given what you have had to go through (not too dissimilar from ourselves) . Most of the frustration is from how(e) long it took to get to this point, although most of it was media hype and the club have been looking at a number of options anyway. With the way football is, you don't really know what is round the corner so there is always going to be a "what if" argument. Your team could push on from here, or drop like a stone for all manner of reasons and Howe could regret his decision just as easily as he could have taken either South London job on offer and ended up a division below Bournemouth next season! I think at his age and given his popularity at AFCB, this was always going to be the easy choice for him (or at the very least perceived as such) . You can't necessarily blame people from looking at that decision and suggesting that him taking the easy option perhaps shows a lack of confidence in himself to succeed in a different and less forgiving environment. Not saying it is as simple as that but you can understand why people might think that way given the lack of emotional attachment to him. Anyway, hopefully it will work in both our teams' favour and against the circus from down the road.

Promotion with bournemouth is by no means a certainty, there will be more monied clubs spending money in this transfer window to put themselves in a better position for that. What does he do then at the end of the season if they don't go up? His reputation may still be sufficient to gain interest from bigger clubs but he'd have boxed himself into a corner with his own supporters. Opportunities like this don't come along every day and it will be hard for him to avoid being labelled as lacking in real ambition and as staying in a comfort zone. However it is difficult to assume what drives the man, if he's a bournemouth man through and through then it's best he stays there, but he may have affected his future career by going stale in the process.

I think now that his head's been turned, he won't still be at Bournemouth this time next season. He will always now been thinking what might have been, and he may now accept the next offer that comes along, be it in 6 weeks or 6 months, even if it is a worse proposition than us. Good luck to him, we'll never know whether it would have worked out for him here. How many manager's cannot repeat success from one club to new jobs in the future? Loads.

Quick question AFCBdc. What do you make of him having a history of talking to other clubs then turning them down? For me that'd be quite frustrating and surely he can't be seen as the hero over and over again. Edited by cpfcwiltshire (11 Jan 2011 2.08pm) This is a very good question. This saga is a complex one really. I think that from a CPFC perspective, no matter how great our manager is, if he entertained the idea of moving to a 'bigger' club on 2 or 3 occasions before declining it I'd start getting annoyed. It does smack of trying to keep reinforcing the notion that you are the clubs saviour and hero. I respect the decision of Howe on two counts. Firstly, loyalty is too rare a-thing in any sport in this day and age. Too much money flying around to drain common decency and goodness from the very best of athletes. Staying with his club and trying to see out the mission he has seemingly set himself should be respected. Secondly, in relation to the previous point, his head would not have been firmly with us and for that we are better off wothout him. I feel that this job will have to be taken on by someone currently out of work or the Doug, because it'll require commitment and desire to get the team where they need to be. Sadly, someone leaving a club in a good state will surely have a slight look over their shoulder (at least initially) at what they left behind. That said, I can absolutely see what has angered many of us Palace fans too. IMO, from Saturday afternoon Eddie Howe was pretty sure that his future was at Dean Court (if not sooner than that). He felt the lump in his throat and knew that he'd be leaving a heck of a lot behind. I think in a bid to raise his profile he dragged it on over two or three days. Of course this is all speculation and supposition, but unfortunately as a club we have suffered for that. Distracted minds within the club will surely mean that the preparation for Saturday's tough and crucial game has been hampered. Something we can ill-afford. Dougie, IMO, has to be given the job till the end of the season. His ability to read the game was phenominal when he was a player and I feel that instinct doesn't leave you. His lack of experience is countered by his passion for our beloved club as well as his intimate knowledge of the clubs workings and the playing staff at his disposal. He'll already have noted what players he needs to strengthen the squad and with the help and experience of Kember and possibly an advisory Coppell I think he has the potential to make as good a fist of the job as anyone else we can realistically expect to join us. Re-evaluate at the end of the season when we have time to get a new manager on board. You never know - Dougie may do such a good job that he becomes our very own Eddie Howe! We've had to sit and watch our best prospects leave without a seconds thought, so it's good to see this golden era may be extended. Sorry, no disrespect to Bournemouth but any club with aspirations to reach the PL and stay there these days has to have the financial infrastructure to achieve it. After many years of toying with the top flight through owners that literally gambled their wealth away, we now have owners who are commercially solid, very wealthy businessmen in their own right. I don't know much about Bournemouth's owners but I don't imagine they're in the same league. Any ambitious manager would look at what he could achieve long-term with the owners' backing and I would think that Palace are now a better bet than most for an aspiring young manager to fulfil the ambitions of reaching the Prem. I just don't see Bournemouth as having the same potential.
The crowd is outstanding, and especially with the penalty after 44 minutes it was clear when we came out after half-time the welcome would be pretty loud and not too friendly. Crystal Palace wanted to strike back, so that was all clear. This is a wonderful place to play football - Jurgen Klopp |

I respect his decision but feel completely flat now after all the hype we now have to wait again and hope that the next person doesn't take a week or whatever it was to decide.

Watching our new board learn on the job how football works is proving to be a painful experience. While we should back them, they do need to start learning rather more quickly than they appear to be doing at present. Furthermore, in any industry (not just football), it is basic prudence and sound management that you don't make a change (thereby creating a problem) until you have the solution at hand (look at Ipswich: Jewell had clearly been lined up at the time Keane departed.) The present situation is a mess; nearly halfway through the transfer window, no manager, little direction, and a team in the drop zone. It is, though, a mess entirely of our own making. The board needs to improve its performance almost as much as the team do theirs.
Hi Rory, Well that was put in place a few days ago so maybe that is what they are happy to lead with and see fit as the best option? I'm sure the money they offered Howe would be enough to coax most of the managers linked.seems none of them were quite right although I'd have though Hughton or Wilkins would work very well with Dougie.Maybe they aren't interested in coming to us,who knows. Remember we have Kember now as well,so it's not necessarily last option should it be them who take the reigns. I just find it a little astonishing that people already, without anything concrete, come on here telling CPFC2010 how to do their jobs. I'm sure they'll be the first to hold their hands up if they feel they wasted their time pursuing Howe and the first to say IF they haven't anyone else lined up and whether that was intentional or not. To further my point, albeit speculation -
1/6/2010.a new era.we made it everyone!!!lets get the ball rolling for another 105 years of proud history.thank you cpfc2010. palace forever.eeaaaaaaaaaaaaaggglless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
