More than happy to be torn apart on this because I am genuinely perplexed as to what this terrible bind the UK is meant to be in and why having Starmer as PM is going to make a blind bit of difference? We don’t need an election. The uncertainty and disruption that would cause is the last thing we need now. What we need is for our MPs to force the government to reverse many of their tax cuts by voting them down. If they resist then they hold a vote of no confidence and replace the PM. I suggested weeks ago that Truss could be the shortest serving PM not to die in office. The fact that we have full employment and employers are struggling to recruit makes the idea we can grow our way out of this even more ridiculous. The measures have not yet been implemented so their impact on the economy has not yet been felt, but the markets reactions tell you what to expect. Interesting days lie ahead. These could be make or break days for the Tories. I

People need to remember that inflation was over 6% in February and rising before the war of anything else.

Pretty much nailed it for me Dolphin. The economy already had flashing warning lights before Covid and Ukraine. And now the Government is embarking on another rudderless raft of economic policies, which has everyone dumbfounded.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

And since when has a policy of reducing taxes been something a Conservative is not meant to support? OK, perhaps playing Devils Advocate on this but all I seem to see is hysteria. I genuinely believe that the elites want an election because they want Starmer in number 10 by way of pushing us back into the EU. 100% what Washington wants for all kinds of reasons. And more than happy to put the boot into this Tory Government but all I see is an economy doing fantastically well in some ways whilst generally suffering from a Covid hang-over that is impacting all over. What is wrong with wanting to put more money in people's pockets?

Yes. Deliberately did not bring that figure up because there are too many ways of looking at that data and what the underlying causes are but it is quite alarming. Even the regional differences alone (I am hazarding a guess so more than happy to be told these are not significant) pose more questions that can be answered. Also if there is a break-down based on ethnicity? A can of worms. Suspect that just a collective agreement that something is untoward might be the best approach. Agreed it is unclear why this number is rising, is it: - People genuinely ill due to bad lifestyle choices - Raising of the retirement age. Who wants to do manual labour at 65. - People on the scrounge. I have no idea hopefully someone will do some research.

Any credible opposition would demolish this claim. Problem is labour could put more claimants on disability benefits. Not saying they will, but new labour did, a lot.
