But why do we need an election? What terrible crisis is the UK facing?

Unemployment at a historical low. Predicted to have the highest growth of any G7 nation. A currency that is holding its own against the dollar and which strengthened against the Euro. Inflation on the decline and lower than the EU average.

I have no faith in the Tories but all I can ascertain is a kind o hysteria taking hold rather than any actual data to back up why people think an election is necessary?

More than happy to be torn apart on this because I am genuinely perplexed as to what this terrible bind the UK is meant to be in and why having Starmer as PM is going to make a blind bit of difference?

We don’t need an election. The uncertainty and disruption that would cause is the last thing we need now.

What we need is for our MPs to force the government to reverse many of their tax cuts by voting them down. If they resist then they hold a vote of no confidence and replace the PM. I suggested weeks ago that Truss could be the shortest serving PM not to die in office.

The fact that we have full employment and employers are struggling to recruit makes the idea we can grow our way out of this even more ridiculous.

The measures have not yet been implemented so their impact on the economy has not yet been felt, but the markets reactions tell you what to expect.

Interesting days lie ahead. These could be make or break days for the Tories. I

People need to remember that inflation was over 6% in February and rising before the war of anything else.
The B of E should have reacted way before that and didn't.
The day before the mini budget the shi t was already hitting the fan - read up independent financial reports to verify - but the mini budget sealed the deal.
They should have held off but didn't which was a schoolboy error.
Labour know all of this but refuse to give the country a break and in due course will look very stupid because they no plan at all.
Mortgage lenders have gone rogue in my opinion and unless reigned in will ruin the country all by themselves.
They seem to want a house price crash which is madness.
I think that Truss and co have handled it badly but there are countless others with very dirty hands and that is before we even discuss war, covid and profiteering.

Pretty much nailed it for me Dolphin. The economy already had flashing warning lights before Covid and Ukraine. And now the Government is embarking on another rudderless raft of economic policies, which has everyone dumbfounded.

I disengage, I turn the page.

But what warning lights? Inflation is coming down. Unemployment is down (the problem is to many jobs available).

And since when has a policy of reducing taxes been something a Conservative is not meant to support?

OK, perhaps playing Devils Advocate on this but all I seem to see is hysteria. I genuinely believe that the elites want an election because they want Starmer in number 10 by way of pushing us back into the EU. 100% what Washington wants for all kinds of reasons.

And more than happy to put the boot into this Tory Government but all I see is an economy doing fantastically well in some ways whilst generally suffering from a Covid hang-over that is impacting all over.

What is wrong with wanting to put more money in people's pockets?

Yes. Deliberately did not bring that figure up because there are too many ways of looking at that data and what the underlying causes are but it is quite alarming. Even the regional differences alone (I am hazarding a guess so more than happy to be told these are not significant) pose more questions that can be answered.

Also if there is a break-down based on ethnicity?

A can of worms. Suspect that just a collective agreement that something is untoward might be the best approach.

Agreed it is unclear why this number is rising, is it:

- People genuinely ill due to bad lifestyle choices

- Raising of the retirement age. Who wants to do manual labour at 65.

- People on the scrounge.

I have no idea hopefully someone will do some research.

Any credible opposition would demolish this claim. Problem is labour could put more claimants on disability benefits. Not saying they will, but new labour did, a lot.
