It's pretty difficult to post a response without saying anything, although I acknowledge some here do try hard.

I also acknowledge I was directing my remarks to another post, so it made no sense and for that I apologise.

If it was a referendum result then it wouldn't be.

It would just be an overwhelming indication of what the electorate thought about a particular subject on a particular day. At the risk of being accused of repetition, the electorate don't give mandates. They elect representatives to take decisions for them. Such a result would though be very difficult to ignore and for the Parliament to survive the next election.

As a democrat I believe that every view matters and that we have a duty to express it at every GE. It seems in their DNA to think that the EU is an evil empire of socialists determined to create a European super state. However that doesn't cover many people who decided to vote to leave. Their reasons were varied, but worries about immigration featured a lot in the beginning, but less so now. A lot were influenced by the claims about what we could do with the "money we would save". The most powerful though seemed to be that old chestnut that anything must be better than this. The idea that any change is better than no change has been a strong political motive for a long time. Sure some like to hang on to the status quo, and fear change, but in the run up to the referendum the idea that we could dump "otherness" and return to the good old days before austerity seemed louder to me, especially within the older age groups. Of course I disagreed with them, and still do, but that doesn't mean I think any the less of them. Many don't take as much interest in politics as I do and rely on their daily dose of the Telegraph, Express, Sun or Mail to get their "information".
