Good luck with finding any MP that you can trust amongst the criminals that inhabit the Commons these days...there isnt one MP I would trust anymore, all in it for themselves unless you can name some?? Edited by the silurian (19 Sep 2019 3.45pm) Your cynicism is unworthy. Most MPs do a thoroughly decent and public spirited job. I have a great deal of time for my own local MP, Sarah Newton who has helped me on occasions with problems. I also think Ben Bradshaw in Exeter is a sound guy but there are many more.

Of course in any bunch of people there are some we don't like, some who turn out to be corrupt and those who are little short of saints. The bottom line is that as who we get is who we choose the buck stops with us. If you don't like who you have just convince enough others of someone you prefer and all will be well. Until you do that just moaning isn't achieving anything at all.

It's much more likely that there is now greater public scrutiny of, and less deference to, public figures who in the past were regarded as our betters. It's all society which has changed.

I wonder if you contravene the forum's rule 14 which includes "14.Do not use The Holmesdale Online's features in a manner that adversely affects the availability of its resources to other users (e.g. excessive shouting [use of all caps] or flooding [continuous posting of repetitive text or topics])." I wouldn't mind betting that you've spouted on about representatives and not delegates at least fifty times in this thread until most of us are heartily sick of hearing it. Spouting on? Continuous posting of repetitive text? I always post in the context of the post I am responding to and rarely to never in an original comment. There have been far more than 50 times in this thread when the basic understanding of how our democratic system actually works is in error. Do you seriously want such mistakes to stand? This is not just an opinion by the way. It's a cold hard fact. If the point was taken and accepted then there would be no need for constant reminder. All I am doing is stating fact in the face of repeated denial of fact. So when the repeated denial of facts ceases so will the need to state the facts. Falsehoods ought never be allowed to stand unchallenged. That's how fake news spreads and conspiracy theories flourish. If things aren't true then they need to be shown not to be true and that applies just as much to me as to anyone else. So if our system isn't a Parliamentary democracy and we actually elect delegates and not representatives let someone explain why that is. No-one has yet tried to, but just go on posting the same mistaken claims. If you want any verification then listen to the lawyers presenting their case to the Supreme Court. They could hardly have been clearer on this subject and they repeated it many times to the Justices. Maybe you will believe them if you don't believe me. This matters, because unless and until folk understand that their approaches are based on a fundamental error of understanding there is no chance that this country can begin to heal.

It seems that our parliament housing representatives and not delegates is based on a speech that an MP made 250 years ago. The Brexit debacle has shown the population that this style of government is not what the populace want as we want MPs that represent what their voters want and not what the MP feels like doing. The vast majority of us vote traditionally and in accordance with the party's manifesto and we expect that the MP that we elect will also vote in line with his party's manifesto. If he feels that he can't do that he should resign his seat and occasion a by election, standing as an independent if he so wishes but giving his constituents the chance to either agree with their representative or voting him out

A YouGov survey shows that there is a majority of the population that shows that they aren't happy with MPs doing their own thing and would prefer a more direct democracy
