Germany had a high Jewish population in the run up to the 1930s, many of whom fleeing Eastern Europe where the Soviets had essentially banned religion. The nazis fed on that, starting with saying "stop them coming in" and isolating them from the rest of society as "outsiders",then it became "ship them off an African country" (for them, Madagascar) before moving to just kill them as the Africa plan was unworkable. as far as i remember, there was not an epidemic or rapes & rape-gangs associated with this tragic movement of peoples ? nor do i recall kids concerts being bombed nor the London Tube being bombed ? The Israeli's have accused Linekar of antiSemitism and i , for one, agree with them. Edited by PalazioVecchio (12 Mar 2023 4.42pm)

What Dyke said may have been true in his day but the BBC rules on impartiality have been tightened up since then due to what is sometimes referred to as the Lineker Effect after his past indiscretions I read that too. So it seems there is a difference of opinion that needs to be sorted out. There is a dichotomy here that is interesting to observe. Those who believe that free speech ought to be an absolute right are caught between that and their instinctive loathing of Lineker's politics. It does though seem to me to be an unworkable requirement that no-one in the BBC be allowed to comment, in their private capacity, on matters outside their own speciality. News and current affairs, fine. Everything else, no.

Edited by PalazioVecchio (12 Mar 2023 4.42pm) I think you'll find there were plenty of stories planted in the press to demonise them, blaming them for all manner of things from theft, to homosexuality, and yes, to child murder and rape. The examples are out there for this if you care to even try challenging your own twisted world view. Edited by inflikted (12 Mar 2023 5.12pm)

I expect it goes via their accounts department and payroll first, but I take the point! We'll see if it's against their rules when this is all over.

Never mind all the free speech stuff. Only a total moron thinks that you can just allow ever increasing illegal immigration, which is already over loading the system, and do nothing about it. Only a total moron thinks this is about the subject of Lineker's tweets. This is about whether he can tweet them, or not. The government cannot be, and hopefully is not, involved.

News and current affairs, fine. Everything else, no. There is no such thing as absolute free speech and people like Lineker have to abide by his employer's terms and conditions of employment just as anyone wishing to post on HOL has to abide by their rules. Why should BBC employees be free to comment on whatever subject they wish when the same freedom is not granted to footballers and cricketers whilst they are playing

Firstly because no-one actually believes that. More importantly, even they did, it's not about that. What are your objections to unlimited immigration? Are you going to answer this - he who responds to every post? Edited by georgenorman (12 Mar 2023 7.16am) Was this aimed at me? I have only just noticed it! If anyone ever proposed that we had "unlimited" immigration I don't think for a moment they would either be elected or, if in power, get it through parliament. We have controlled immigration and a problem with illegal immigration as well as refugees being trafficked.
