Potter is a good choice! And if we can get him long before preseason starts, it's even better. His connection with Amex will make the rivalry games even hotter.

It leaves us under constant risk but our position is sustainable. I want what you want too, but not at any price. It's a tricky challenge to progress in the PL. Palace are going about it the right way. We have a really top quality academy and lots of top quality young players, potential starters in the first team squad. Getting youngish experienced talented manager is an essential building block. Potter ticks all the boxes in that respect.

Potter is a great coach, but I think his problem is perhaps he is not a great manager, which is why he struggled at Chelsea. He wouldn't have those pressures with us. Although people have questioned whether he could get our squad playing like he did previous teams it is worth mentioning that our squad is a lot better than the Brighton one he inherited from Hughton and he completely overhauled their playing style to good effect. Also, while he does tinker a lot with tactics former players and other coaches reference the fact that players always seem to know their roles. If he hadn't managed Brighton previously this would be a no brainer appointment as he has consistently succeeded right up until Chelsea . It is a big issue though as if he struggles to make an immediate impact fans may not be patient. On the plus side he never beat us when in charge of Brighton, so maybe he has a secret affection for us! Taking Roy out of the equation I struggle to see a better option than Potter. The only other one that I would personally be happy and confident to see is Brendan "Tropical Tan" Rodgers, but I just don't see him wanting to come to us.

Dont take Roy out of the equation, i am sure he would take a years contract, and i am in the opinion that McCarthy can be groomed to take over the role, at just the time when the youngsters will be ready, its a massive gamble to employ Potter but also his entourage that will come with him.

They've been in The Premiership for 3 seasons, gambled and lost. I haven't once said we need to spend our way to success. Are you seriously suggesting that all four of those clubs are far bigger than us?? (Villa probably are I'll admit) We are going into our 12th Premiership season and supporters like yourself, and I'm genuinely not having a go here would be quite content to finish 4th from bottom every season as long as it meant staying in The Premiership. I'm not asking for a top 4 finish here. I'm merely saying that after this long in The Premiership we should be looking to just move on a step which as we have seen from the clubs I've mentioned is not unreistic.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

If we did go for Potter, and all parties agreed I would like to see Hodgson in some sort of advisory roll.

Sorry, you misunderstood me, I meant if either Roy doesn't want the job or isn't being considered then for me we could do a lot worse than consider Potter. He is a very good coach and we have some serious talent at the club.

The season before the one just gone, Potter's Brighton went on a winless run, around 11-12 games I recall. A large section of their fans had lost faith in him and wanted him gone. So he's had a few bumps in the road to contend with. Would I like him at Palace ? Overall yes, but with some caveats. Paddy looks like he's earned his chance to work at first team level and it could well be that the incoming manager would be expected to work with him. That would mean no place on Potters staff for Bruno ( who is more ' Brighton ' than Potter ). Most managers want to bring their trusted staff with them, but I would like to see Paddy retained. It's a massive achievement for our club that we are in the Premier League for eleven consecutive seasons. Appointing Roy for another year guarantees nothing but he's a safe bet in keeping us there. However, we have to manage without him at some point, and that's the conundrum for Steve Parish. So I think it comes down to who is out there now and available - tough call.

Brighton went on an 11 game winless run and only scored 8 goals in those 11 games. They did finish 9th that season, after finishing 15th and 16th in Potter's first 2 seasons at the club. These runs are experienced by most teams around our level at some point. Roy had them in his previous tenure. The question is whether they are a signal of a deeper problem or a temporary blip. Potter showed at Brighton it was a blip and when he left this season they were already on the path to a successful season. Brighton booed their players when they lost to Everton a couple of weeks ago. Their fans are ridiculous at times.
