I am sick of the whining coming out of Newcastle. Far worse fouls were committed by Newcastle than Mitchell's nudge on Willock which the ref let go. I think what has upset Sharer and Co is the fact that the toon spent £217 million and still couldn't beat little old Palace on their own patch.

Don’t see why PV is being criticised for his comments on the incident. The question is whether Willock fouled the keeper because he was pushed by Mitchell in which case it’s either a pen or an OG. Either way it doesn’t negate the fact that Willock flattened Guaita which is what PV said when asked to comment.

Yep, I said this at the time, when someone asked why it was disallowed. It was very clear on the stream I was watching that the player nearest the camera remained offside as the ball was kicked - the other 2 I couldn't say as it was a much tighter decision. From what I can make out from this pic is that Willock is clearly nearest to our goal line and as soon as he becomes active after receiving the ball instantly becomes offside, VAR should've been looking at that and not only the actual incident. If I've got the offside rule wrong someone please tell me. Attachment: Offside3.png (436.84Kb)

It would have been really funny if after the furore from Shearer & Co there'd been a miscommunication and VAR had in fact ruled it out for offside. TP, the photo you shared is of the initial free-kick, Willock didn't come into play until it's headed back across goal. Not sure who won the initial header and whether they were offside though. Edit: looking at the footage again it's Longstaff who wins the header and he's not offside. In real time Mitchell hardly pushes Willock though; I mean, if that constitutes a push then we'd be having free-kicks every 10 seconds. Edited by taylors lovechild (06 Sep 2022 11.53am)

I have a soft spot for that part of the world as I did my degree there and spent many a Saturday afternoon watching the toon at home. However, that was a long time ago and the bond has withered. Now, I am equally sick of their incessant whining which I can hear all the way down here on the Channel coast notwithstanding the wind and our builders hammering away upstairs. We had a right to complain about the Liverpool pen last season as it smacked of interference to give Liverpool a leg-up to avoid a coronation of Man City before the last snows had melted. They do not have that right. Seriously, Dermot Gallagher said he would have disallowed the goal so it is no obvious error. However, that has not stopped the numerous blogs calling it the worst ref decision of all time (see Mark Clattenburg reffing for Manure for worse examples) or the club shamefully lodging an official complaint and possibly managing to get the VAR ref suspended (probably taking a paid week off until the Geordie whining dies down a bit). When I read they had done that I was embarrassed for them. From a region where they pride themselves on their toughness, I do not see a club taking it like a man. Pathetic.

Wasn't the goal given, then over-turned by VAR, meaning it was an obvious error ? but I agree with The Rest. I had a soft spot for Newcastle of the past - with the likes of Tino Asprilla, Laurent Robert, Nobby Solano, David Ginola even. Great teams and enjoyable to watch. nowadays they are just a whiney bunch of conceited Geordies.

Can’t believe 3 days after the match and the Toon army are still moaning about the VAR decision. Get a grip! Do they really need to focus so much energy on that and ignore the other chances in the game they should have taken. Toys back in the pram and move on - you’d get a lot more respect that way!

The worst moment of this game was when we had a throw-in on the left during the first half about 20 yards short of the corner flag.

Edited by taylors lovechild (06 Sep 2022 11.53am) Could not agree more, Mitchell puts his hands up trying to head the ball and lightly touches Willock in the process, definitely not a push and Guaita is definitely taken out by Willcock so VAR correct. Shearer is a good example of why ex-pro's should never be involved in VAR decisions as they were suggesting on MOTD!

The continuing uproar about the decision is beyond belief. It was a reasonable decision which can be debated - not a massive error as the Toon supporters are claiming. It does not even call VAR into question. The West Ham one was a more obvious error but refs make mistakes whether we have VAR or not. In the pre-VAR days you just had to live with them. Now we can discuss them but the idea of scrapping VAR because of them is just absurd.
