With CG in the side we went from losing the ball & setting up camp on our 18 yard line to a more combative win the ball back much further up the field approach, an almost inevitable consequence of this all action style was to become more vulnerable to giving away fouls, but I would much prefer that we gave free kicks away on the half way line because we were trying to win the ball back rather than because we were camped on the edge of our box. I really dont think he is that good a player, a great engine and decent finisher but he has so much lacking in his game, he had a very good first half of the season but went off the boil in the second half, even Benteke and Puncheon had one good season for us,i wouldn't buy him. full stop. He is a great player, but only if you play into his strengths. As stated on this post, he isn't a great passer. So if we got him back would it be the same as the back half of the season? Where he is played further back and not to his strengths. Given how well Eze is playing atm the only condition I'd sign Connor is if we are going to play him in Eze's position. Which nobody would want to do.

CG brings a lot of energy to the team which is useful however I watched Chelsea yesterday and when put in a more holistic midfield position which entailed more responsibilities than just a free, running around like a madman and popping up in the box role, I thought he looked sorely out of place and exposed. Eze looks to be getting close to full flow, linking well with Zaha etc. If I only had one wish it would be a partner for Doucoure, someone a bit more defensive minded, and a good ball winner who is comfortable with ball at feet too, over CG.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

The problem for Gallagher is that Tuchel may like him and want him but he doesn't need him. The result is that if he tries to squeeze him into the team, it's in the wrong position and as today showed, that's not going to end well for anyone, Connor or Chelsea. All parties have a tough decision to make and something is going to have to give. Either Connor is going to stay and likely sacrifice a year or two of his career with no better than an even chance he does eventually end up in a position that suits him, or he's going to have to go and put his boyhood club behind him. The only certainty is that he's not going to get what he really wants (an attacking midfield shirt at Chelsea) anytime soon. The next ten days are decision time. With regards to Connor coming back to Palace, I sort of agree with a lot of the posters above; he had a great half-season and an average half-season. I'd take him back, but I suspect Chelsea will want more than he's really worth to us. And to some extent, we've already moved on from what we were in the first half of last season so our needs have also changed and we're not really as desperate for him as we might have been then. The one proviso for me is that I get the impression PV really loves Connor and would have him back in a pinch. If that's the case, I'd give Vieira what he wants; it's a good enough reason for me. The interesting bit over the next ten days will be if Chelsea is prepared to sell and us, Newcastle, and Everton all come in with bids, which Connor will choose. That will tell us a lot about him. I've always said that aside from Doucoure, he's been our main target over the summer and until he's ruled out, that will remain the case. I still think that. Pretty much how I see it. If you look at our last two performances it makes you wonder whether we need CG back. I do think however that he would have gotten at Arsenal in that opening 20 minutes, and inspired more than the passive start we saw from the team. I think you're right Syd, if PV wants him then we back the manager and rely upon him to make it work.

Sounds like a modern day upgrade on a player who I noticed featured for Forest on the weekend. A midfield of Soumare somewhat holding, Doucoure playing a more box to box role and Eze moving the ball up the pitch both on his own and playing passes would be very encouraging.

Here you go mate: I agree with alot of that. He does get caught alot and does get booked alot also, What i do like about him is his high pressing and puts defenders under presure and scores a few also . He does drift in and out of the game alot, but that only natural as no-one can keep up the pace he plays at. About Huges he is very under rated in midfeild and was very unlucky not to score against Villa Saturday . I still wouldnt mind having Conor back though . We love him and he loves it at SP. his enthusiasm is infectious . IMHO of course .

His ability to “get stuck in” would be an asset to have in the squad as it was last season and it would be unfair to describe him as a one trick pony given his ability to get in the box and score goals but to stretch the horse metaphor Eze is a thoroughbred who would be ahead of him on the team sheet. Bottom line is he’s not worth 40 million at this point.
