Exactly. Buying for £17-20M and getting two good seasons out of a player before selling him back for £40M and making a £20M profit sounds like a good deal to me. The £20M would then contribute to purchasing a decent replacement. However, I suspect our hesitation is more to do with Brewster having to compete with Bats and that might present some difficult issues re game time etc. In any event I'd like to see us pursuing him or a decent alternative as we need extra cover up front. If we good guarantee that I agree it's good business. The problem is that we might pay £23 (current rumour) for a player who is a dud and has no track record in the PL. The risk therefore is all ours if he fails Liverpool have a laugh at our expense if he succeeds they buy him back. Under that deal the buying price would have to be a lot lower for me to be interested. Edited by Badger11 (01 Oct 2020 8.37am)

As I understand it Pete - It leaves us with no control or say in the timing of the buy back, which impacts negatively on our ability to build a squad for the longer term. If Brewster tears it up for a season Liverpool can pay £40 million and take him back. We wouldn’t be able to keep him longer or sell him for more to another club. That's not my understanding of a buyback clause as I thought that it only came into operation if we decided to sell the player and in those circumstances Liverpool would have first option at the pre agreed price

I understand they are pretty complex provisions that will say whatever the contracting parties want it to say. Unless there are rules governing their terms (?), they could easily say that Liverpool have a right to demand the buy back at any time. That would be after a certain period - but not in the same season as that isn't allowed. In such a case, even the player has no say in that decision. I would imagine a team with the financial clout of Liverpool would seek to impose such a clause. Which could explain - together with our not too distant history with that club - why we were put off; but the Blades may be happy to take a punt on those terms. They will learn, as we did - twice. Pity, as had we been the only suitor, we could have negotiated better terms.

Another one gone: 'Sheffield United have agreed a deal to sign Liverpool's England Under-21 forward Rhian Brewster. The deal, which is worth £23.5m, includes a buy-back option for three years and the Reds will get 15% of any sell-on fee':

It's really stacked in Liverpool's favour - 'give us loads of money for a young player with potential, but if he's any good we can get him back or receive a further big payment'. It's the sort of deal a desperate club takes, and we need to move beyond being that club.

Was we ever really interested? Not sure? I think better value in SB and the lad from Ipswich with no buy back. JMO
