I used to frequent this website all of the time, albeit as a lurker. I'd read posts about transfer rumours, team line ups, general Palace news and always dipped into the general other chat. Now I don't bother. It's basically become an forum where a select few members spout often ridiculous, exaggerated, false or downright offensive opinions and gang up on anybody who disagrees. I've actually seen the website discussed elsewhere as a cesspit of hard right views. Palace is a multicultural, welcoming club, with people from all backgrounds but you sure as hell wouldn't know it from this forum. I rarely come here now and can't stand that the topics here are a reflection of the club that I know. I'm sure I'll get the expected attacks on this from the usual suspects. I think it was half the reason they separated the general talk forum but it does seem to have been hijacked by a handful of bigots, perhaps the mods turn a blind eye as long as its kept within these confines. Some decent contributors also feel they can behave like complete dickheads on this section for some reason, very odd

Why on earth are you using a Crystal Palace fan forum to endlessly post your hardline political views? Surely there are better places for that? I used to come here for Palace talk and would happily chat with people whom I disagreed with on other topics. But all I ever see is the same old tired cliches, broken arguments and abuse about the EU, Muslims, Tommy Robinson, race, etc etc. It’s so predictable I can even guess the topics certain posters will start threads on before visiting the site, based on what’s in the news.

Likewise, I spent years not even registered on here visiting to see what was going on. I joined in the end because it had become so boring with 2 or 3 posters dominating everything and shouting everyone else down or making snide remarks I thought I'd throw my tuppence in. I don't care if it offends anyone. Being offended is entirely subjective. If you don't like what you read just close the thread. Words off of the internet by anonymous strangers can't hurt you, more people need to keep sight of this.

Well said and in your follow up. The problem is that the "usual suspects" are in total denial of themselves and think that the views they hold are somehow acceptable and therefore ought to be tolerated as part of the debate. They scream "free speech" when anyone objects and then use rather silly insults that would be more at home in a primary school playground than in a forum like this. They even deny that they are far right and think they are part of the mainstream. This is the type of attitude I would have expected to see on a Millwall or even a West Ham forum. I realise every club must have a few like this but are ours all really here? My association with Palace goes back well over 60 years and I cannot recall a time before when it was anything like as bad as it is now. I really don't think it's doing the club any favours at all for this kind of stuff to be appearing here. There are specialist sites where such people can confirm each other's biases to their hearts content.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Who are you? Who are you to start telling others what is 'acceptable' and what isn't? Like you saying that Palace is multicultural and welcoming.....well buster, this is my culture so live up to your own words. Were you on here complaining about this rubbish when Gusset was starting three threads a day on far left talking points? This is the political section on the site, all politics are welcome. No one has been booted off for their politics. You have your opinion and you are entitled to it. But your opinion seems to be more centred on stopping the opinion of others. Besides 'Palace talk' isn't the forum for politics so like most of what you've said, it's phooey. Edited by Stirlingsays (21 Feb 2019 2.49pm)

Words off of the internet by anonymous strangers can't hurt you, more people need to keep sight of this. That's exactly what I've done, closed the thread. And eventually visited the site less and less. I love politics and will happily debate with people from all areas of the spectrum, but life is too short to do it all the time, or indeed when you just want to find out what people think the team line up will be for the game at the weekend. I'm afraid I don't have the time or energy to reply to people who are too far down the rabbit hole to see clearly each time I log onto Hol. And I'm pretty thick skinned, don't think that just because I've complained about some posters that I cry myself to sleep each night over it. What some oddball who can't stop posting on about immigrants on a football forum thinks really doesn't bother me, but it is a shame that a website that represents our club is being taken over by a vocal minority who are giving a false impression of what our club is all about.

There are specialist sites where such people can confirm each other's biases to their hearts content. The denial is a very strong part of it. Echo chambers are very dangerous. I agree it's important to challenge people to try and break down those echo chambers but it's an awful lot of effort when they are too far gone, as some here sadly seem to be. And as we've both said, it seems very odd that they come here, to a Crystal Palace forum, to air these views. It makes me wonder do they do the same in every single part of their lives? Own a motorbike - post about immigrants in the forum. It's all very odd, and the denial that they've gone off-map is a huge part of the problem.

Perhaps so. But it would interesting to know the stats on volumes. It feels like there are a hell of a lot on these types of topic. I put it down to the number of people that have moved out from Croydon and are scared to leave their semi-rural enclaves for the mean streets. They don't see life as it is lived by most of us, just what the sensationalist Press chooses to push. I think the first thing to do would be count the number of posters starting these alleged topics to see if there really is an issue...most of the bile on here only comes from 3 or 4 posters when there are how many on here?

You are very welcome to challenge my views on immigration and multiculturalism. My views have become how they are based upon statistics. Go for it. I'd like to challenge your viewpoints on these topics but I fear you are too far gone and brainwashed. So it's very odd that you come to a Crystal Palace politics forum to discuss your failed ideas in these areas. Edited by Stirlingsays (21 Feb 2019 3.07pm)

Then why not continue using HOL for your football fix and not bothering with the rest as that's what most of the forum members do as this politics area is only populated by a tiny fraction of the overall membership. The majority of the criticism of the supposed right wing bias from "another forum" is generated by someone banned from here plus his coterie and to describe this place as a "cesspot of right wing views" shows just what a load of rubbish he spouted because as far as I can see the so called cesspit probably consists of just two people

That's not where I heard the comments, of which there have been several. One was even overheard in Selhurst. Not a good look for Hol.
