I would say that we flirted with the drop last season and that was with one of the top defenders in Europe who has now been sold.
That suggests to me that we had better make some good signings, especially as everyone around us will be strengthening.

But as others have opined, not a very imaginative

He’s had a good AFCON. Looked good in front of goal and seemed to hold the ball up better than I’d seen from him. His confidence was pretty low last season after a poor start. He definitely was looking better, I hope he can continue to improve but I do think this is a useful signing.

What I have noticed about him as the season progressed he became more of a team player. He worked hard up front chasing the ball down defending from the front. His lack of goals is a problem but I can see that now that he has been Hodgsonised why Roy wants to keep him. With Roy it's all about the team and the plan and it appears he has adapted to that. Not going to set the world alight and if he is the only striker we sign we are in trouble but a useful squad player. One more point

I wonder how much buying players for this coming season is 'holding' brief. With Roy only having one more year on his contract, maybe there is a policy not to go out and blow the budget on one or two 'star' buys who may well be not the choice of whoever comes in. Also, after this year, several of the higher earners will be out of contract too, so giving even more scope (with wages savings on virtual deadwood) to build from scratch with players that the new manager actually wants. Just a thought - and players like Ayew, a known quantity, would fit the bill nicely. A stairway to Heaven and a Highway to Hell give some indication of expected traffic numbers

Also, after this year, several of the higher earners will be out of contract too, so giving even more scope (with wages savings on virtual deadwood) to build from scratch with players that the new manager actually wants.

Just a thought - and players like Ayew, a known quantity, would fit the bill nicely.
