I’m glad you don’t predict relegation as things stand though and I’d agree with you on this.

Did it have the phrase 'we will be relegated' in it?

I would say that we flirted with the drop last season and that was with one of the top defenders in Europe who has now been sold.
That suggests to me that we had better make some good signings, especially as everyone around us will be strengthening.

I don’t think for one minute Ayew is a starter but as a bench player he won’t break the bank.

There is finite money for wages, signing a squad player for a reasonable fee and wages leaves more money to strengthen other areas.

I do, it's you that clearly doesn't! Skip right back to the post I was originally responding to which you then jumped all over, completely missing MY point.

The original poster was saying exactly that: that the players on the highest salaries should start.

Incredible insight! How in the world did you gain inside knowledge about this most secretive transfer?

If this is true I will be about as delighted and enthusiastic as I was when the clinic told me in 1997 I had gonorrhea....

Just seen his penalty against Tunisia yesterday, short run up and blasted high to keeper's right.

If he is signed seems a good standby if Luca is injured
(and that's assuming we'll get any more pens if Zaha leaves us!).

But as others have opined, not a very imaginative
choice as a striker. I'd have Gayle back any day.

He’s had a good AFCON. Looked good in front of goal and seemed to hold the ball up better than I’d seen from him. His confidence was pretty low last season after a poor start. He definitely was looking better, I hope he can continue to improve but I do think this is a useful signing.

What I have noticed about him as the season progressed he became more of a team player. He worked hard up front chasing the ball down defending from the front. His lack of goals is a problem but I can see that now that he has been Hodgsonised why Roy wants to keep him. With Roy it's all about the team and the plan and it appears he has adapted to that.

Not going to set the world alight and if he is the only striker we sign we are in trouble but a useful squad player.

I wonder how much buying players for this coming season is 'holding' brief.

With Roy only having one more year on his contract, maybe there is a policy not to go out and blow the budget on one or two 'star' buys who may well be not the choice of whoever comes in.

Also, after this year, several of the higher earners will be out of contract too, so giving even more scope (with wages savings on virtual deadwood) to build from scratch with players that the new manager actually wants.

Just a thought - and players like Ayew, a known quantity, would fit the bill nicely.

Good post I hope your right because it means that the club has a strategy rather than the knee jerk "get im in" to keep the fans happy.
