Eric Clapton once nudged my elbow at a pub bar (The Star in Broad Green) and spilt my drink a little - "sorry mate" he said. I told this to a girl who was a big fan of his and she kissed my elbow, so I said "he kneed me in the balls too".

I do hope this is true

Too young to have gone to The Star but what an incredible live gig line up they had over the years I found out via an older work colleague who used to go. That unassuming little pub in Broad Green.

Mick Jagger once told me never to drop names

It is true, Cream gig. They played there twice in 1966 and 1967. I was drinking under age of course, The Star served you even if it was obvious you weren't old enough, half my school class were there. I think they lost their licence for a while because of it. Saw Hendrix there too. By the way, there is an excellent book of the music scene in Croydon 1960-1980, "Rockin and around Croydon" by Chris Groom.

I like a few of his but not a real fan. I'm a big Dylan fan, apart from the dire stuff he comes up with sometimes. Billy Bragg too - with the same qualification!

His old stuff really - pre 1992. Not all his stuff is political and I like his 'old left' oriented songs (I'm old left really!). Post 1992 output is rubbish as are his books.

The rates were on the house, not the person.

SO it's OK for only homeowners to pay rates for services provided but everyone else gets off free? And that is fair?
And now some pay far more in council tax based on the totally unfair banding system but that's OK because people who are likely to riot don't pay?

Please.

I'm well aware what rates were, and that they were on the house. My point was you knew when you moved into a house the rates were going to be high or not. When you went through high school you had no say you were going to pay the same household tax as senior management executives.

The point is that those not yet homeowners don't need clobbering any more before they've got close to getting on the housing ladder. You've obviously forgotten that in your 'why should I' viewpoint.

And tonuse the shop worker example, why should he pay the same living in small and not so pleasant accommodation due to income pay the same as the office professional?

It's a regressive tax, plain and simple, brought in by the Tories to make their core voters more comfortable and others the opposite.

So you 'agree with riots' if you don't like a law that a democratically elected parliament has passed.

If it's over an ideological one and a regressive tax belonging 5 centuries ago, yes. Thatcher's cabinet warned her not to. If it was such a fair and palatable policy your wish would've been granted in the last 25 years to keep those young people at home all paying more taxes so you can know they're in that situation and you're a few quid better off. Hasn't though has it? Why? Because it's blatantly punishingly unfair.

So rioting is acceptable if you don't agree with a government policy? So the Notting Hill riots were ok because some people didn't agree with the immigration policy?
