This post has been merged from a topic called 'Palace v Ipswich ' by Guntrisoft Still more questions than answers although an experimental / understrength team with PVA at right wing-back. Thought it was dire for first 70 minutes or so until Townsend's introduction. First half too much ponderous / pointless, slow passing in our own half whilst Ipswich mainly stood off. Only really got going once we made subs and started to commit forward and MacArthur had opened the game up with a bit of quality. Lokilo looks too lightweight and doesn't appear to have pace to compensate. Reserve judgment on Kai Kai as he must have been frustrated with the square passing and lack of support at times. Struggling to see us scoring goals or keeping clean sheets so a 4-0 win Saturday.

In the end the scoreline was closer than I had first anticipated. With the team put out thought Palace would win by a good margin but credit to ourselves the kids were undaunted and gave it a go. No shame in defeat, we kept you out for long periods and only lost the battle in the closing stages. Thought Palace were quite sluggish at times and didn't look bothered, on another night - and with a stronger starting XI - we may just have gone through but can't change what was witnessed tonight. Still got the league to play for and if we win this weekend that's five wins out of five, obviously disappointed to be out of the competition but in that small minority that actually care about progression and wanting to do well. Fair enough the kids put out tonight did well and brought no shame on themselves, but the unambiguous apathy some within our club set-up (that) regard cup competition is blatantly evident. Hope to play your again sometime, next time will hope for better outcome.

He's said enough times his preferred system is 4-3-3 but that didn't seem to suit our squad. It's likely transfer targets will be players that suit more than one system if the three he's got so far are anything to go by. Tonight looked like he was trying to see if he could get both working with the players he had (including the fringe ones). Absolutely spot on thank you, I was going to say just the same, that FDB had talked about the 4-3-3 option when questioned soon after his appointment. COYP

Good win and that's all that counts in any cup competition. First goals of the season also, so that account is now open. Clearly the players didn't want to risk any injuries that would risk their places in the next PL games and reflected by some of the regulars not playing at all. Good result, now focus on Swansea.

Nice post, I was hoping the game had been in Ipswich as it's an easier journey to Ipswich than palace for me, nice club and fans, best wishes for the season

Enjoyed last night. The atmosphere and performance was better than the Huddersfield game (not difficult performance wise and the atmosphere lacked the tension that we had in the opener). Thought the youngsters grew into the game. Lokilo started badly. My criticism was him backing away from passes and looking scared to be challenged. Once he did get clattered he was a new man and just came alive. All credit to him, I was dying for him to score to ram my criticism down my throat. Almost did twice! For me that was one of the factors in turning the game. Edited by Part Time James (23 Aug 2017 7.44am)

Oh, and when PVA realised he could go up the wing and cut in if he was wrong footed then he made a big difference. Was disappointing and even lazy when he stood about dwelling on his left footedness.

We weren't great but we looked much more settled in possession - even when being pressed/closed down an dthe passing looked better too. If & when we speed it up we look fairly decent. At times, especially when Townsend was on the pitch, the transition from defence to attack was very good & the score would probably have been more if we had a powerful striker on the pitch. Switched off a bit right at the end which led to three defenders not taking responsibility & clearing an easy ball over the top. Odd points of note: Kelly looked half decent There's a lot of work to do but signs of improvement are clear. sorry do not mean to be harsh or unreasonable but cannot get it out of my head we are supposed to have PL footballers who were playing a championship youth team and although we did win it was by a small margin and were were made to look very ordinary for long periods and still the defence showed its incompetence in dealing with balls coming at or behind them, so I'm still very concerned that unless we strengthen at the back we are going to struggle in this league!

Putting it into context, it was a 'squad' team from a club smashing it in the championship who have won every game so far this season. Very well organised & players fighting for a first team place, clearly desperate to win. A far cry from the Bolton side we struggled to beat last season. We did control the game and, with more firepower up front, it could've been quite different. If I'm honest, at times it looked like a training match with us practicing possession of the ball, passing & moving. Work in progress but I'm far more confident about us than I was 10 days ago.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |

A win is a win ... how we get there doesn't matter. By all means use Cup games to experiment (that's what preseason was for too!) but FDB should have the team set up properly to win league games. If he hasn't got the 'right players' yet for his system he needs to adapt. In my view, we should have six points on the PL scoreboard by now with three more due this weekend.
