My wife was explaining to me why she loved 'Chop Suey' by System of a Down. I must admit to having no idea what it was about other than some brutal riffs with a man shouting too fast to understand over the top.

I'm very much a lyrics kind of man.

So you are married to a rock chick. My missus is going to see Mama Mia in a couple of weeks if that tells you anything. TBF I have dragged her along to see KISS a few times and she has been subjected to years of Metal. As a result she does know the lyrics to more songs than she would admit to in public and that Jethro Tull is not a bloke.(not since the seed drill anyway)

True. I went to see The North Mississippi Allstars at the Garage years ago. Loads of big names in the crowd, Noel Gallagher, Richard Ashcroft for example.
I bet not many people have heard of The North Mississippi Allstars.

Yeah. Musicians have their heroes. People they aspire to be as good as or have been influenced by.
Most of the truly talented people are largely unknown.

Tragically this probably more true than at any other time. We find ourselves in society in which people are more concered with how they feel or perceive something than any facts or statistics about a subjects.

I had a conversation with someone tonight who is totally convinced that the earth is flat, with a domed roof on which stars are projected. Anything that suggest otherwise is a conspiracy. How can anyone deal with that kind of embraced ignorance.

Whilst the delusion that the worst off in society are ripping everyone else off is the delusion of the right.

Or,in the rock context,African Americans whose ideas and innovations were ripped off and made someone else piles of money....stand up Led Zep and Elvis to name just two

I must be further to the left than I thought.

If there are "spongers" then they are in large part due to the failings of our capitalist society to provide adequate education, training and rewarding jobs.

Then again, some are just sponging b******s.

True to a degree. I don't think the artists can be blamed for being influenced, but society can be blamed for suppressing black musical talent. Those days are now over.

I'd also say that rock has not just been influences by the blues. It has also absorbed classical music and other traditional forms.
I doubt Bach or Beethoven stole their ideas from a black man.
