He's been a bit part player really but has scored five never-the-less. He's got a great eye for goal and an impressive turn of speed; if he could just improve his strength he'd be well worth what we paid.

Reading all of you "talent scouts" reaffirms my belief that opinions are like touchises, everyone has one and most of them stink. When it comes to a young talent like Gayle, I look for little things that indicate to me where a player's talents lie. Watching Dwight Gayle Monday night i saw: !. Positional awareness. While any striker can run into the centre of the 18 and wait for service, Gayle pulled off his marker and gave Bolasie a full target to pass the ball. He kept his feet moving, received the ball on the turn and slotted confidently to the far post and in. You can't teach it any better. On his second, he ran off of his strike partner (Murray) and kept going into a strong shooting position and shot with his opposite (left) foot from the first. 2. Two footed capability. See above. 3. Accurate finisher. His shots go on target and require the keeper to make difficult saves. In other words, a goal scorer. This past season, Palace has lacked that kind of finishing talent. A mere finisher, as kermit8 said? We should be so lucky. Palace desperately need one or two of those. 3. Pace. This Palace squad is built mostly on pace. Bolasie, Puncheon, Dikacoi, Ward are all pacy players with great on the ball skills going forward. Gayle's first goal was made on Bolasie's pace and ball skills. Gayle has the pace to keep up with his providers and convert their service. 4. Young and trainable. These two talents are intangible but vital if any player is to succeed under a manager like Tony Pulis. As I have observed, Pulis is a manager in the mold of someone like USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann. He is a teacher and someone who is not married to one specific tactical system. In fact, Pulis showed us on Monday a talent that Klinsmann has showed throughout his tenure with us Yanks, the ability to change tactics during play and turn matches around. Gayle's "can-do" attitude and willingness to learn is crucial if he is to succeed at any level. Perhaps the Prem is a different kettle of fish due to the international nature of its player profile, but that doesn't mean a young player who grew up in Britain can't succeed. It is that kind of player, not the big-money European/South American big shot, that is the future for Crystal Palace. We need for the Dwight Gayles of football to succeed rather than having to go out and buy our way to success. I realize that he is our most expensive purchase, but he came through the British club system, not the continent. There's my opinion on this subject. Like all others, it is just like a touchis. I've certainly got one, sometimes I get a real pain from it and it often stinks! Edited by kenbarr (08 May 2014 3.45pm)

Dwight can play in the Cam Jerome role but with goals. He'll need to up his work rate but in terms of holding the ball up etc he isn't that bad. I'd be interested in seeing how he gets on with Chamakh behind him.

Without a doubt he's Class. Mark my words. Pulis has had to do the best with what he has got, and has played a team hard to beat. It will be a busy summer with several ins and outs. Hopefully and I'm pretty confident Gayle will be part of next seasons squad. I would be shocked, genuinely, if Gayle is here next season. I thought yesterday's cameo was probably a bit of shop-window time for potentially interested Championship clubs to have a look at home once the City game was lost as much as anything else. He's class? Not even close, on the evidence of this season. No way. You'd have to be a fantasist to make that leap of faith because there is almost zero physical evidence to support it. He's young? No, he isn't. He's not old, but he's no "kid". He's inexperienced in top flight? Yes, he is, especially for a 25 year old. But that's because he hasn't been good enough to get that experience, particularly this season. Pulis has had to do the best with what he's got? Indeed he has. And Gayle has been what he's had all season, yet even in instances where we needed a goal more than a "chaser" like Jerome, he's barely played. He's been last-off-the-bench for months now. Even after his one golden moment (at Villa), Pulis put him right back nowhere, which made a pretty clear statement to me (given how managers usually ride form players for as long as they can.) I think Pulis' opinion of him is written pretty large, on the evidence. I'm not going to bang on...I said my piece on Gayle earlier in the year and promised to lay off thereafter. But this kid is nowhere close to good enough and if we can recoup even a small percentage of what we paid for him, I really would be gobsmacked if he's here when pre-season training opens. Of course, I may be totally and utterly wrong, but that's how I see it. Arguably a worthwhile gamble but it didn't pay off and now time to move on quickly.

TP said some interesting things about how he and the coaching team have worked with Gayle, obviously to great effect. Gayle is clearly part of his plans for next season.

'Dwight Gayle is a goal machine'! I don't know whjat the 'goals per minute' stat is but it's gotta be impressive. For those that slagged him off in this thread... Sssshhhhhh.

To come to a club as record signing must be a real millstone around your neck. Sounds as though he wasn't ready for that kind of pressure and TP and the coaching staff have looked after him rather than simply dismiss him.

Great way for the lad to end the season, scoring 4 in two and becoming joint top goal scorer for the club, despite only starting 9 games. I think Pulis was probably right and Gayle has used this time to really hone his skills, build up and take advantage of the training staff. If he keeps this up through pre-season, he'll be a first choice player. All four goals were very good striker instinct goals. And in three of them, he got behind the defence perfectly.

Well, he's scored 4 goals in the last 115 minutes. If he keeps this up for next season he will score 118 goals... Edited by andyg (12 May 2014 3.22pm)

Perhaps if poor old Wilf had been nursed and nurtured by someone he too would have had the opportunity to make an impact at some stage over this last season. Anyway, let's hope young Dwight's end of season form is a genuine pointer to what he might contribute next season. If it is then I for one am excited by the prospect.
