I thought student loans and grants weren’t payable until you earned a certain salary after you have completed your education. Has that changed now ? My daughter did a 4 year course leading to a Masters degree. She left with over £60k debt. When she left the interest rate was 6%+. It is repayable when you start earning over £21k. This debt did not cover all her accommodation costs which had to be met by bank of mum and dad.

Correct it is more of an impact in the future (I was venting) it saddles them with debt which impacts credit cards / loans / mortgages. However there is also student accommodation which impacts them now. I just think that universities have no interest in cost cutting and bleat that education would suffer. There is plenty of scope for cutting back for starters too many lecturers don't actually lecture or do the bare minimum as they are more interested in pursuing their personal research. I know this from a professor who is a friend. If the teachers actually put in a shift you wouldn't need as many. Then of course there are the mickey mouse courses and degrees which take 3 years and could be done in 2 if the faculty put their mind to it. Just like GPs they are a protected species. Edited by Badger11 (06 Oct 2022 7.54pm) Correct. An ex-boyfriend of my daughters was doing a creative writing degree. He only attended Uni fir at most, a couple of days a week (suited him as he was a lazy s***) but I may be biased but his course was still costing him £9k a year Edited by Spiderman (06 Oct 2022 8.54pm)

Agreed but that is a government responsibility and should happen. Uni's are taking the proverbial when it comes to student fees. They could easily cut back on their own spending. Although student loans are now administered by a private company, Ibelieve

It does count as a figure of expenditure which is correct as should be declared for whatever it’s for; but not as a loan like a credit card, mortgage or HP etc.

Yup I see that. Tax breaks for all is fair unless you’ve got dough which makes you the enemy. Nurses are being asked about striking over pay. Where has that come from. They agreed a decent rise two years ago and now want more because we are in a worldwide dip. Do they think private companies and employees arnt struggling ? While I'm not a Truss fan, I can see the sense of what she's trying to do....I just think it was completely the wrong time to do it. That kind of stuff needed to be implemented once you had a good four/five year run at it...Not in the middle of a term two years from an election. Mind you, perhaps she realises that it's going to be so bad economically anyway that going a bit mad in hunting for growth was the only light in a dark tunnel. I just sit here almost bemused at the sheer incompetence of our elites....managing decline and presenting it as success. I hate lying and BS so it all just makes me incredibly grumpy. Nicola Sturgeon has accused Liz Truss of doing “real and lasting damage to the fabric of British society” after crashing the UK economy, sinking the pound and threatening the poorest with further austerity. And what for, a very average growth target that most economists view as wildly optimistic. In fact its turning out to be an anti-growth budget, the anti-growth coalition is her and Krazy Kwasi. Still I mean extinction rebellion is obviously behind it, or anybody who thinks she is plain daft.

The CONS have decided not to launch a public information campaign on reducing energy use after the prime minister"s office raised objections! There was a reasonably well developed plan to encourage household energy saving- but lizzy blocked it- presumably as there is no crisis - nothing to see here , not under my watch!Anybody hear the cheering from the lemmings when liz said in the hustings there will be no power cuts? Its a bit like giving high fives if someone says , you will eat every day this winter!
